Sky Glass Cloak

Sky Glass Cloak

Sky Glass Cloak

“Those that don’t embrace the dark every night, will learn to fear it every day.”

This cloak might appear to be of simple light red cloth, with a gold trim. By night though, it takes the appearance of a bright sunny day, projecting light to illuminate even the darkest places.

The effect this has on a person’s mind is subtle at first, mild paranoia will lead to frequent nightmares. After prolonged exposure to the cloak, a person starts to grow a dependency on it, as quickly, every bump in the night or imagined nightly terror consumes their mind.

When they start to even fear even simple shadows during the day, their minds are beyond repair.

Tonight, my players plundered a vault of one of the characters’ deity (Thankfully the Cleric wasn’t here this session). However, i, as the GM, had no items prepped. So, naturally, i turned to my players for help. Here are a few of the items they came up with.

The Sap Marble

A marble made of tree sap. Really sticky.

When you attempt to free the marble from something it’s stuck to, roll +STR.

10+: It is released from the object.

7-9: It is freed from the object, but stuck to you.

6>: It has not moved, and neither will you.

Eye of the White Tiger

An ivory orb suspended inside a marble half-circle. Strange runes surround the rim, which when translated say something about the thrill of the fight?

However, eventually it became too time consuming to keep asking them for items. Enter Fantasy Name Generator. I would have the player roll a d4 to determine how many times i pushed “randomize”, and then a d10 to determine which object from the list they got. Some of the items are rather… interesting.

Gauntlet of Malice

A light red gauntlet with some rather gruesome additions: spikes, blades, bloodstains, etc. Once put on, it cannot be removed unless it has been accepted by another bearer.

1 weight

+1 to Hack and Slash

+1 to Interfere

-1 to Aid

Rod of the Dead

It appears to be an enchanted immovable rod. When the button is pressed, the rod, and any corpse the rod is touching, stops moving.

Jar of Eternal Health

This neverending health potion is so powerful that it has become sentient and aware of its godlike ability. As such, it only allows those who ask it really nicely to use it.

When you ask the Jar for a drink, roll +CHA.

10+: It allows you to drink your fill. Restore your HP to its maximum and remove one debility.

7-9: You are allowed only one sip. Regain half of the HP you are missing, or remove one debility.

6>: It does not let you drink, and you shall feel its scorn.

It is also noted that it is really rude in general, and has a very “Holier-than-thou” attitude.

I like making items that have an upside and a downside.

I like making items that have an upside and a downside. It requires the player to make a choice as to whether or not they’ll use it.

Can I get some feedback on my latest? I’d like my party to find it in the next session or two and want to work out any kinks…

Blood Oath Bow

An ancient bow stained black by what must be centuries of dried blood.

When you use Blood Oath Bow to Volley, roll as normal but treat the result as 10. Then take damage based on the actual roll.

10+ 1d6

7-9 1d8

6- 1d10. Do not Mark Experience.

The idea being that you always automatically hit with it, but at a price.

Any thoughts please? Thanks!

Burning Wheel

My twelfth #Inktober drawing is another #DungeonWorld magic item, the Burning Wheel.

Today’s drawing is of a cleric encountering a Burning Wheel in Dungeon World. I thought trying to depict a powerful and terrible religious experience would be an interesting problem. I had a lot of fun with this one.

I hope you like my attempt at drawing my take on this magic item from the core rulebook.

I’m participating in #Inktober this year in support of my #ExtraLife campaign to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children. I’m going to draw monsters, weapons, and magic items from the #DungeonWorld rulebook and from the Dungeon World Codex (http://codex.dungeon-world.com).

If you like the drawings and would like to support me in Extra Life this year, you can donate to my campaign at http://www.extra-life.org/participant/jimjones.

You have my sincere appreciation if you do.

This past weekend Adrienne and I ran our 24 hour Extra Life board game marathon that benefits Riley Hospital for Children. We had over one hundred unique visitors with over two hundred visits over the weekend. We had a ton of free food, including multiple smoked barbecue pork butts, three egg breakfast casseroles, homemade lasagna, deli sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs and four different kinds of chili. We ended up running multiple board game tournaments and a couple of sessions of Two Rooms and a Boom. Finally, we gave away over eighty Play-to-Win board games and had over one hundred and fifty silent auction items.

All the money that I raise goes directly to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. My youngest daughter, Rogue, had a life saving cranial reconstruction surgery at Riley when she was just a little over one year old. Today, she is a happy and healthy almost six year old who is thriving in kindergarten.

Let me know what you think.

Boots of Speed

#MagicItemMonday

While wearing Boots of Speed you may Defy Danger w/ DEX to run anywhere within Near range in the blink of an eye. Note: You are not teleporting or flying so there must be an unobstructed path to your new location but as the boots are magical you may run up and down walls, across liquids and ceilings. The boots also do not provide any additional protection so running across minefields sets of mines, running across lava burns your feet. Unfortunately they are made of Quickling skin and most Fae folk will treat you with extreme animosity if they know you possess this item.

Trying to come up with magical items for our new campaign. Is this clear enough?

White Glaive of Light close, 2 weight

These broadswords were forged by titans for their wars against the gods. Over the ages most of them have disappeared since they possess the power to strike down even the most powerful of enemies. The swords hold a magical condition: to use them the wielder must perform three heroic acts. If the condition is met and the wielder goes into combat he my use the White Glaive of Light to attack any kind of being as an equal – from gods and titans to smallest of goblins. The sword can wound them all.

Anyone ever make items that take the place of the player class moves? Even similarly.

I was thinking of starting a setting where magic is very, like VERY, limited. So much so, that even the people are extra ordinary. The excitement happens when ancient and mystical artifacts find thier way into the hands of wannabe heros. Thats when “Class” moves and spells come into play.

To sum it up. The moves are attached to items, not the characters.

Crumpled up scroll of Restoration

Crumpled up scroll of Restoration

An unwanted scroll, made in haste. This crumpled scroll has been discarded and forgotten. When you read from the scroll and your target can hear you, Pick a desired effect and Roll + INT. The scroll looses its magical power afterward.

> Cure a debility, repair broken bones and regrow lost limbs and organs.

> Restore 2d12+4 health.

> Vanquish a lesser Undead Monster.

10+ Choose 1

7-9 Choose 1 and the GM makes a move.

> The scroll is unfinished and requires that you rest and Make Camp for it to take effect.

> There are obvious mistakes made. Discribe a troublesome quirk that now makes your life difficult.
