Below is a series of three dungeon starters designed to be played in conjunction with Funnel World, by Jason Lutes. This content isn’t QUITE the final version (I’d like to do another edit and add some finalized art) but I wanted to share it here while I still have the chance.

Within:

A variety of custom moves to improve your game

Alternate rules for villager creation

Three adventures meant to inspire play and test your villagers resolve

A variety of random tables to use how you will.

Enjoy!

Below is a beta version for a set of three funnel starters I’ve put together:

Below is a beta version for a set of three funnel starters I’ve put together:

Saviors of Hogtown: In which a small backwater village must band together to prevent a war and discover their own origins.

The King Beneath The Castle: In which the surviving townsfolk of Stargard Castle discover a dark secret hidden beneath their feet.

Shark God’s Chunder: In which a wrathful deity from the deep threatens a seaside town with utter destruction.

I’ve also put some effort into providing alternative methods of play, additional moves to enhance the game, and a fair number of tables to be used in different ways! So far they’ve made for great one-shot adventures for myself and at cons and the titular adventure even sparked a 24 session campaign some years ago.

Enjoy!

Oh, and comments are appreciated.

“Your father was a rare thing in your village…a man that could read. And read he did; trying to find life’s true meaning. The world is ever full of “wonders and signs” your poor father used to say before he succumbed to the bleeding ache (or was it the aching dropsy?) He found the stars a wonder, a leering leper a sign and his own hideous demise a prophecy of….he never said; probably because he was too busy dying hideously. He certainly would have found the crushed hovels and disappearances of local village families to be spiritually meaningful. You and your friends are more practical; something has to be done before your entire village is slowly removed from the map and you with it!”

I’m hosting a game night this Wednesday that will likely have 10-12 attendees. I’d like to run an RPG. Right now I’m leaning toward a Freebooters Funnel (so it would double as a playtesting session for the current Funnel rules).

For the Funnel I would divide the players into 2-3 teams of 3-4 villagers each, and have them assaulting the citadel of the dark lord that has ruled over their families for generations. Each team would be assigned or come up with a different avenues of approach.

My plan is for each avenue of approach to involve 3-4 challenges before the confrontation with the dark lord. One player on each team would be nominated as a caller/leader, responsible for organizing and communicating their team’s plan to tackle each challenge. I would describe the situation facing Team A, then leave them to formulate a plan while I move on to Team B, etc. then return to each team in turn to resolve their plan (as communicated by the team leader) by the usual procedures. My hope is to produce a satisfying one-shot session for a dozen players with a minimum of waiting/downtime.

Anyone ever done something like this before? Are there any potential problems that I may not have considered? Any ideas for incorporating further opportunities for play within each team as I’m dealing with other teams? Any existing “assault the citadel”-style adventures/examples that I can look to for ideas?

Thanks!

Funnel World/Freebooters/Wilds with my 3 year-old this morning: Abeodan, a lowly fletcher from Werwúlf dreamt of becoming a police officer in the big city of Grassy Bluff. Found a goblin cave on the way and arrested 2 of them, hoping to impress the police chief.

He was accompanied by Leng, a beggar whom he owed a drink, but also had nothing better to do.

So I’m planning on running servants of the cinder queen as a funnel in a weeks time.

How would you go about adjusting some of the enemies to fit the funnel scenario? For example I noticed the guardian of the library had 4 armor which would mean the villagers couldn’t really land blows plus it’s 1d8+4 damage would outright kill a villager (Which I’m fine with but could do with a few surviving past the library). Should I keep the stats the same and have them hope they can find a way to subdue it? or lower its armor slightly to make it a tough but winnable fight? or just adjust a bit on the fly as to how its going?

Also for anyone who’s played the module as a funnel or regular DW, when/how many times did you encounter Thorde Skull? Did he get to the book of rains first? Any suggestions related to the module or not welcome.

Rol20 + Hangouts

Run through the Funnel World meat-grinder with a motley crew of level-0 hapless villagers. If the fates are kind you might just be left with a hero suitable for future adventures in the Reaches of Nalvros Dungeon World campaign starting in mid-March.

3-4 players, each player randomly generating 3-4 lvl0 villagers to go thru the funnel. Play via Roll20 with Hangouts for comms. Stories & Dice community members have first priority.
