Seriously: if you need inspiration for a “wood of adventures” style thing, look at Bomarzo Park, link at the end of the original post.

It’s XV century architect populated out of strange and wonderful sculptures for the entertaining of an Italian noble family, and the thing has a phenomenal “old school”, “chanson de geste” vibe to it.

It’s full of mysterious and fantastic elements that could help you finding the right aesthetic of a game.

When people search inspiration for their upcoming fantasy campaign they often look at medieval England or Germany, at the Arabian Desert or as far as New Zealand.

They

People are objectively wrong in this assumption.

As every filmmaker of the eighties knew (and you can’t contest such an authority) the quintessential fantasy scenario is Center Italy.

You don’t believe me?

Look what I found in a single day trip in the Umbria region.

Cities digged in the living rock of the mountainside! Seedy alleys squished between ancient buildings! A wood populated by monsters, gods and dungeons calling adventurers to explore!

You can’t make this stuff up better than the real deal!

(the town is Bomarzo, but in this corner of Italy there are even more characteristics mountain towns, the road is in Orvieto, I found seedier ones but they were too dark. The wood is the Holy Wood of Bomarzo, an early modern “mystic garden” of unknown meaning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardens_of_Bomarzo?wprov=sfla1)

DUNGEON DINNER 120 OMEGA

RPG Thoughts:

From a thread on RPGNet, on “TV Shows in a D&D World”:

http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?748955-TV-Shows-in-a-D-amp-D-World

I’m totally surprised that no one came up with…

DUNGEON DINNER 120 OMEGA

A reality contest held in the ancient elven ruins: Two teams of contestants each have one hundred twenty minutes to delve into an ancient dungeon known to have wild and magical fauna (in other words “not just displacer beasts”, but a wide variety and power level of creature, all over the place), slay a monster, bring out the carcass, and use it (or parts of it) to cook a balanced three-course meal.

120 minutes total for delving, slaying, looting and cooking. That means if they go in for 20 minutes, kill a few rats, and spend 100 minutes cooking them, that’s fine; though more points and laurels are given to those that take the extra time to hunt/slay moderately strong or hard-to-find monsters. Plus, they make for more rare/exquisite cuisine.

Plus, it gives more adventuring reasons between seasons: Sure, the necromancer’s tomb has riches and magic items, but it’s also rumored that the liche carries an ancient tome that details with exacting illustrations the edible parts of the aboleth, and contains at least six recipes (including aboleth sashimi with nam pla/garlic dipping sauce; and the original aboleth rib sautee dish that was presented in LA1480 to Shar-harth-lora, then-ruler of the Triton Empire of Sla).

Bonus points are given to variety, and expression (of the monster, dungeon, or other symbol (cleric of the sun puts sun/light motifs in at least one course, etc)).

The chefs have to do the dungeon-crawling (it can’t be 3 mighty adventurers while 2 cooks stay behind and wait for the meat; weak chefs can join the party in the back, hopefully won’t get killed/eaten); but the show’s producers and audience clearly favors contestants who are both skilled adventurers/dungeoneers AND chefs.

It’s season three, OMEGA, because the last two seasons completely emptied four dungeons of all monster and treasure. But the ancient elven ruins seem to stretch on forever with no end of monster or magic in sight. There’s apparently an ancient, terrible reason for both the ruins and the endless monsters; but whatever the producers don’t give a crap beyond the high ratings they’re getting.

Here is a preview of the new manuals that will be relased tomorrow, as usual posted with the sole goal of boasting Italian coolness.

The are A5 format (approx 15X21cm) to better sit on your gaming table without eating too much space, they are soft cover with foldable wings to increment durability and they have both been cut out adress-book style to allow for a quick and pratical content search.

The paper is an experiment, copied by japanese publications, soft, lucid, very white and beautiful, but with an high density (allegedly increasing durability). The Dungeon Wolrd manual weights the best part of a kilogram!

They are manuals thought to be pratical and usable.

I cannot wait this evening to have those two bad boys in my fatty hands.

Finalmente nelle mie mani. Morbidi come pennelli. Bellissimi.

Another nice preview of the Italian edition, this time from Inverse World manual.

You can see the art by +Francesca Da Sacco, that perfectly captures the dreamy and romantic spirit of the setting, my favourite iconic character, The Walker and how the new manuals will have teir borders cut, to allow for an easy research.

What do you think of it?
