A few years back there was a thread, I want to say it was here maybe, where either Adam Koebel or Johnstone Metzger talked about “radioactive space wizards” in a game that broke fantasy/sci-fi genre conventions (as DW/Planet are wont to do). My Google-fu is failing me though.

I don’t Hangout while I’m with my fiancee. We have limited face to face time together with each other as it is (weekends and holidays), as we unfortunately are not yet living together, and even though she is personally totally okay if I decided I want to do it, it makes me feel bad spending time in the same place with her while I’m involved in something with other folks that she’s not involved in. I could totally get her involved, but I’m glad that we get to play the games that I can get her interested in, so I don’t often nudge.

If I have Hangout-gamed with you before, then I’ve probably brought this up already. If I haven’t, then here ya go. I really don’t feel that I owe anyone an explanation (except for you fine people that I have or who I want to Hangout game with), but I’m all for transparency.

Does anyone remember where in the core book it talks about how you can resolve a character getting handed up on my multiple foes? It’s something like roll the damage for one, add 1 for every for odd the same type beyond the first? I remember reading it but now I can’t find it. Or maybe I’m talking rubbish?

leaning towards the ambitious side, we have:

– a Walker (Inverse World class), human for fiction purposes

– an Elf Ranger (core class)

– an Elf Mage (alternate class)

– an Engine of Destruction (Dungeon Planet class)

– a “snake-man” Artificer

They took a job for Star Inc., infiltrating a secret R&D facility for the Torg Consortium on a jungle planet, where they found experiments towards creating dracoliches from dead dragon parts that involved a twisted mix of necromancy and nuclear radiation. They cleverly evaded injury by the native fauna (a razor boar, a crocodilian) and re-programmed the chrome radiation-fueled skeleton guards to eliminate the facility’s skeleton crew of organic beings.

So as I drew up the DW version of my Scroll-Caster magic item, I had to look at the Common Scroll from the Magic Items section of the book. I noticed two things:

1. The spell on the scroll has to be castable by you or on your spell list, but do you actually roll the Cast a Spell move when you use the scroll? “The spell takes effect, simple as that”?

2. The spell remains on the scroll after it’s first used? The spell/scroll isn’t consumed in the casting?

(I am referring to using the scroll without my Scroll-Caster.)

Scroll-Caster

This silver tube, engraved with an intricate artistic pattern, appears at first glance to be an elaborate scroll case. The caps on either end are each set with a roughly-hewn onyx, bound in silver wire. When a common scroll is in the tube, and both ends caps are fastened, the wielder can sense the arcane energies present and harness them as if they were a spellcaster.

When you gesture with the scroll-caster in hand and speak the command word, roll+INT. On a 10+, the spell scribed onto the scroll is successfully cast (as if it were castable by you or on your class’s spell list). On a 7-9, the spell is cast, but choose one:

• You draw unwelcome attention or put yourself in a spot. The GM will tell you how.

• The spell disturbs the fabric of reality as it is cast—take -1 ongoing to using the scroll-caster until you wait for a minute or two and let reality settle back into place.

• After the scroll’s spell is cast, the scroll is depleted, leaving behind an ordinary sheaf of parchment.

Spell Research (Wizard Advanced Move for levels 6-10)

When you consult far-flung curiosity cabinets, kibbutz with exotic arcanists, and filch half-finished manuscripts from rival eldritch masters in an effort to discover a new arcane formula, draft a magical effect not covered by an existing spell. Work with your DM to determine this new spell’s level. Roll +INT : On a 10+, you can add the new spell to your spellbook and can prepare it as you would any other. On a 7-9, the spell counts as one level higher than what was agreed upon. Regardless of the result, spend a number of XP equal to the level of the spell.
