Paladin of X?

Right now the human paladin seems a lot like “Paladin of Good” (or maybe justice)

How about this as a Racial Move:

Paladin of the Sun

While you are on a quest your weapon emits pure sunlight in a halo around you and even magical protection from sunlight won’t protect the creatures of the night from it.

Paladin of Nature (by Alex Norris)

You were chosen by Nature to protect her. When you pray for guidance, even for a moment, and ask “what here offends nature?” the GM will tell you, honestly.

There are hopefully tons of other options. As an inspiration, here are the deity domains of the cleric:

Healing and Restoration

Bloody Conquest

Civilization

Knowledge and Hidden Things

The Downtrodden and Forgotten

What Lies Beneath

With it being #PaladinWeek  and all, the topic came up of non-human Paladins (which I happen to love).

Paladin of the Holy-Cross: You don’t choose your own quests; they are the will of your god manifested in you. Instead of choosing your own quests, the GM will tell you what you are questing for. Choose 1 vow you have to fulfill during all your quests and 2 boons that are active for any quest you are on.

In addition to them you always have

An unwavering sense of direction to the goal of your quest.

Based on Michael Carpenter – the best Paladin in all of fiction (for me)

Why i really like the Paladin

When i started with DW the Paladin was the class i wanted to play the most. (i didn’t have access to the Druid at that point)

The Quest ability is really powerful but i am not talking about getting Immunity or a shimering halo – i am talking about the power to influence the game.

You could just start the game and say “You know what? I quest to Slay Nelerox – the Lich Dragon that is a big blight on the land” and suddenly there is this undead dragon in the game and it will be about slaying that gal!

Of course the first session should make sure that every player has input into these things but if a GM doesn’t really follow the procedure you have your own tools as a Paladin to get your interests into the game.

I really like this. I sometimes am really mistrusting of other peoples GMing and having a chance to say “hey GM THIS is what i want in the game” is huge for me.

Of course the Quest could be ignored by the GM, that is a whole other problem.

The main problem with dictating the Groups quest is that you are doing it. Bernd Pressler voiced his concerns that the paladins quest would take over the whole group and make the game ONLY about what the Paladin wants so keep that in mind.

I dunno if anyone else is working on it for #paladinweek  but it has to be done; the Anti-Paladin?!

So Guys tell, me: How important is it for you that Paladins are only human? In a generic fantasy theme, would it be ok for you if Oaladins from other races would exist? If yes, what Races  and racestereitypes do you think would work well, with the paladin background?

#paladinweek  I just wrote up a compendium class called the Divine Crusader.

#paladinweek  I just wrote up a compendium class called the Divine Crusader. It basically lets a paladin (or cleric, or druid/ranger who worships a deity) form a stronger bond with their god, and the boons that come along with that. It’s inspired by the Favored Soul class and the Divine Crusader PrC of 3.5, as well as my class, the Champion, which will be coming out in Grim Portents Issue #2.

Let’s talk about Quest for #Paladinweek.

Let’s talk about Quest for #Paladinweek.

Let’s talk about Quest for #Paladinweek. I reckon it’s simultaneously the best move outside of Ritual and criminally underrated (though I’ve not discussed the Paladin here before!).

The good:

I love that it’s completely in the fiction, even the mechanical effects of the move are fictional boosts (e.g. invulnerability to ___). Better yet is the actual vow, which seems to generally say “my god totally wants me to murder this bad guy. I love that. Suddenly the evil dude goes from a campaign front to personally connected to the players via a vendetta, which opens up a whole world of awesome fictional possibilities.

The vows afterwards are also damn cool, and really make the Paladin’s character as a holy warrior who behaves in set ways to retain their honour.

The still-good-but-not-quite-so-awesome:

I’m not actually too keen on the boons. One of them seems significantly better than the others (invulnerability to _) and so is pretty much an auto-pick. The rest are good, but don’t seem to offer that much customisation (aside from “Holy Mark”, which can be interpreted in a lot of ways). I’m stumped for other boons, though! What would you guys go for? Ideally I’d like the Paladin to get some things they can customise a bit more towards their specific god.
