What is the max # of players you’ve had at a table and at what point does it get unwieldy? I currently have the possibility of a 5 players table and a 6th has become interested. Does that become too much?

On handling the narration of combat.

On handling the narration of combat.

On handling the narration of combat. I’m curious on how this goes in others games as far as who narrates the interpretation of the roles during combat. I always tell my players that I’ll narrate what happens but if they prefer to than just step up and do it. About 95% of the time it’s left up to me but honestly I wish they would take more swings at it. I have one player that often has really imaginative outcomes that keep me on my toes and often opens up whole new avenues of were the combat can flow. On the other end of the spectrum I have a player that still says “I use hack and slash”. The majority just say something along the lines of “I swing my sword at the goblin”.

Part of me feels that maybe some players are intimidated by the amount of control they have over the game. It could also be the level of creativity or to quickly improve things varies between people. I feel getting vivid and interesting descriptions really brings the game to life. For example I was playing at a convention game and the gamemaster always used 7-9 in combat as a straight exchange of damage. While she was a competent GM her technique towards combat made it feel rote and lifeless.

So what are your feelings and processes to the above? I want to stress there is no right or wrong I was stating my preference only. I’m curious about other’s preferrences.

Idle thought.

Idle thought.

Idle thought… a class (probably some sort of wizard) that starts ridiculously powerful, but that grows less so through XP.

Like, imagine something like a Boaz, First of the Magi in Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy. Ancient, ridiculously powerful, but each time he uses his magic there’s a significant risk of it going completely out of control and draining an enormous amount of vitality & power from him, vitality/power that he does not get back through any normal means.

At the same time, he’s got this enormous life history, a network of temporal power, and no shortage of powerful enemies and old grudges working against him.

You could flavor it a few different ways: an ancient magus (like Boas), a lich or mummy, a forgotten deity, a pharaoh/god-king.

I think a class like that could be made interesting. But could it be made in such a way that it didn’t completely overshadow the rest of the players? Is DW even the right game for it?

Hmm…

CROWDSOURCING…

CROWDSOURCING…

CROWDSOURCING…

The antagonist in issue 6 of my Session Zero zine will have three moves based on certain aspects: Title, Clan and a Staff. The Staff will always be the same (The Staff of Souls), but The Title and Clan come from a card draw from a regular deck of cards.

Each card rank gives a different title, which gives the antagonist a specific artifact that comes with a move. Likewise each suit gives a different Clan name which tells what “eternal form” the antagonist has, and dictates another move.

Example: Kind of Diamonds = Kazlan Dirr, who is a Lich wearing the Crown of Command (and wielding the Staff of Souls).

Kazlan Dirr

HP, Armor, etc.

Lich description

Instinct: X

(which requires the Staff)

I have the four clans and the staff, and two of the artifacts (“Crown of Command” and “Tiara of Teleportation”) but need help with the other 11 artifacts. They need not be alliterations, but need to be concise enough that you can easily understand their move just by their name.

Thanks in advance. If I use your suggestion in the zine I’ll include your name with it!

Help me find a sci-fi game. I’m looking for a PbtA game that fits the following traits:

1. It’s as simple as DW. The only sci-fi PbtA game I have is the Sprawl. It has to many bits to it for my tastes plus I want to sandbox. I want something as close to 1 basic moves sheet + playbook with no multiple clocks or subsystems.

2. Gonzo space opera. An insectoid cyber ninja vs. Squidoid psionic hitman type deal. Not interested in human centric or hard sci-fi. One of the reasons I love DW things start crazy and only get crazier as moves snowball.

3. Prefer dead tree rules but this is the least important trait.

4. Makes vehicles smooth and simple. Even outside Of PbtA games I find vehicle rules can slow down play.

So any suggestions?

What playbook would you suggest? My reflex was paladin but I don’t think she wants to go on the religious side.

The fighter playbook doesn’t especially have anything about being honorable.

There are interesting stuff in the Fated hero but god it’s broken!

Anyone used the Dread Jenga tower mechanic with DW?

Anyone used the Dread Jenga tower mechanic with DW? I’d love your advice if you have. I’m thinking I’d use the tower as a countdown for “things get *more” Lovecraftian” and do a pull any time anyone touches anything eldritch.
