One Shot World is a hack of Dungeon World that removes most of the long-form mechanics and replaces them with simple rules designed to facilitate one-shots and short campaigns.

I have recently worked very hard with Greg Soper (of Minimal Playbooks Plus fame) to completely remake the original playbooks – they are now cleaner, easier to read, and far, far prettier. We’ve also replaced or rewritten the moves and many of the basic rules.

Take a look here:

Feedback and criticism welcome.

When I finish redoing the GM Booklet I’ll publish it on OBS.

I will be on a panel during Gauntlet Con, talking about what a DW 2e would like. Jason Cordova, Jeremy Strandberg, Ray Otus & Cameron Burns will be there, too.

I have compiled a list of questions, if you guys want to fill it out. That way, I can try and represent what the general DW community cares about!

I’ve often been frustrated with how damage works in Dungeon World (and D&D/OSR systems as well). The mechanic of rolling for success, then rolling separately for damage has never sat right with me. For example, a 12+ roll resulting in just 1 or 2 damage, presenting a mixed metaphor (as well as a let down for the player). I know you can make it work in the fiction; I usually describe the PC knocking the opponent out, or something. Nevertheless, I was interested in seeing how this mechanic, ripped right out of Vagabonds of Dyfed by Ben Dutter, might work in my favorite fantasy RPG.

I’m aware that folks like the way damage rolling works in DW; I’m not super keen on rehashing this argument for the millionth time. What I’d really love is some feedback on the mechanic itself, and whether it’s useful, fair to monsters & PCs, etc.

Thanks for your time & feedback, folks!

One Shot World is a hack of Dungeon World,, designed specifically for one shot sessions. Many adjustments have been made to the rules, core moves and playbooks to simplify character creation & worldbuilding; the rest should still be very familiar.

Anyways, it’s free so you should totally check it out! I had a ton of help from this community during the Alpha release, so feedback of any kind if very appreciated!

The entire game is the One Shot World Core Rules, the Playbooks folder, and the Playkit. There are also two booklet files for printing purposes in the Extras folder.

I’d love feedback of any kind.

This is for when you didn’t bring the DW book, but want to give players those sweet, sweet magic items. It’s tiny!

I hope it comes in handy for you, as it has for me.

Oh, and here it is not in pm format:

I cooked up some Keys For Dungeon World, as seen in Lady Blackbird and The Shadow of Yesterday.

I cooked up some Keys For Dungeon World, as seen in Lady Blackbird and The Shadow of Yesterday.

Keys are goals, ties, beliefs, or vows a character has.

They are meant to replace Alignment or Drives completely.

Keys have two aspects: A Hit, and a Buyoff.

You Hit the Key when you do something appropriate to it; you hit the Buyoff when you forsake your Key and replace it with another.

I’d love some feedback! This was initially planned for Worlds of Adventure but I think they work just fine in Dungeon World as well. As you can probably tell, I cribbed a lot of the structure and style from existing sources (mostly from Jeremy Strandberg and Tam H).

Changes as of 2/10/2018:

Removed flavor text (sorry)

Combined 1XP/2XP keys into one single line, they are now 1XP each

Removed “elevating keys” (basically keys that get more intense) in lieu of divergent ways to hit a Key

Tried to make the Buyoff a bigger deal

Wrote instructions for how to use

Changed font size to have more Key groups per table (fewer pages)
