Here is the line: “once per level, on a critical hit, it can make an attack against anything—a shadow, a spell, an emotional bond, someone’s fate, someone’s death. The thing you target has to be within sword’s reach.”

Which I think is awesome, but I don’t know how to translate the once per level on a critical hit part.

One alternate is: when you hack and slash, on a 13+ hold 1. You can spend the hold to target anything [edit: the next time] you hack and slash. But I’m not sure if that’s correct. Thoughts?

The newest episode of Discern Realities is here! This is the second in our Dungeon World Basics series. For this one, we’re covering combat in DW, which can be one of the most intimidating aspects of the game if you’re coming from something more traditional, like D&D. Our aim here is to de-mystify combat in DW and provide some best practices for running one.

Enjoy!

I’ve never GMed Dungeon World before and have only played a few *World games. I’m fairly confident about most of the concepts that make them different, but I’m still nervous about taking the plunge.

That’s mainly because I’m likely to get flustered trying to remember and seamlessly integrating the moves and agendas during the game.

Is there any advice for a first-time DW GM? Maybe focusing on only a few of the most essential moves?

Telephone Scorpion

When you hold a telephone scorpion to your face and let it sting you in the ear, you begin to have vivid hallucinations which take over your senses. If you think of someone, and they also have been stung, you find you can see and communicate with them, no matter how far apart you are. The hallucinations will probably stop after an hour or so.

When a character spend a use of an adventuring gear, do you have them write the produced item on their character sheet (if the item isn’t “used up”)?

For example, if they produce a lantern, a rope, a hammer, other permanent item, they fictionnaly should still have it later, right?

Hi all

Hi all

Hi all,

A few friends and I have been playing PbtA games at our friendly local gaming store, the Brooklyn Strategist in Carroll Gardens, NYC, for a few months now. It’s usually 3-4 of us. We were wondering if there would be interest in a twice-monthly meetup for more people.

We’ve played DW, AW, and we’re looking to try out Freebooters on the Frontier. We usually play the first and third Thursdays of the month.

I’m just wondering how many NYC folks would be interested in playing in a regular game.

Foreword: My party obtained a stone from a twin magic stone set that let you teleport anything from one stone to another. And they know that the other stone is right in the center of the main city, in the governmente quarter. (and they hate the city government for some reasons)

In tonight session they were fighting a Devourer, and after a sequence of very unlucky dice throws, one of them find himself stuck inside the devourer’s limbs.

I then use the devourer’s ability “Bargain for a soul’s return”. The immolator istantly says “We can teleport you FROM HERE AND NOW in a place full of yummy souls! …IF you free our comrade of course!”

And the devourer doesn’t even ask for a proof of that because the immolator rolls 12 at Parley!

The devourer proceed to free the ranger and the immolator throws the magical stone to the monster, and with a pokeball-like special effect the devourer bumps into it and teleports to the center of the government quarter (and that discharges the stone)

…Then, after a long debate to decide if they should kill all the guards that witnessed, they decide to just convince them that they have no idea about the location of the other stone.

And everyone lived happily ever after!

Except some.. oppressor governor and stuff, maybe some innocent servant. Well, that’s life!
