What fantastic, bizarre, or interesting ways can food be consumed in Dungeon World?

What special utensils have been created? What kinds of mouths were they created for, and what food do they carry to those mouths?

What spaces have been reserved for eating food? What mealtime customs happen in those spaces?

What are some interesting varieties of dungeon rations? (not my zine name, the actual foodstuff in Dungeon World.)

What kinds of meats, veggies, breads, crystals, gasses, smells, sensations, and effects might make up these rations?

What attributes make them ideal for being “rations”? How do they keep well? What makes them good for traveling?

Be creative!

Rich, detailed storytelling/scene setting is something that many GMs struggle with, myself included. That is why I’m making this zine! I’m aware of the fact that it is a delicate balance. Being overly focused on details makes for boring play or distracts the players. I would love to get the community’s thoughts on detailed storytelling in general!

GMs: what is your best piece of advice (yours or someone else’s) on describing scenes with effective details? Why do you use details?

If you have any other thoughts on detail-oriented storytelling / GM-ing, please contribute.

Creative prompt (answer any or all of the following questions):

Create a staple food (like rice or wheat) for a fantastical society. What makes it fantastical, or just odd? How have the unique properties of this food shaped the culture of this society? How is it harvested? What dishes can be made with it? What does it taste like?

I’ve had a food zine brewing (pun intended) on the backburner (also intended) for a good long while.

I’ve had a food zine brewing (pun intended) on the backburner (also intended) for a good long while. The most recent Food focused episode of “Play to Find Out” (a great DW podcast) finally kicked my butt into action to finally turn it into a zine!

So I’d love to crowdsource some ideas! Please take a moment to fill out this survey (all questions are optional! Answer only what you feel like.)

I’m planning to start a DW specific zine that focuses on the small bits of the world that GMs tend to gloss over. Things like food, customs, cultures, rocks, etc. My aim is to have each issue focus on a specific element and push it to it’s most interesting and GM useful extreme!

The first issue will focus on Stories! Tales, art, music, lies, and books.

Please post one of the following:

– An interesting story-telling method of Dungeon World

– A bizarre move / monster / setting / item related to storytelling

– A plain old interesting story template (not a full story, just the setting, tone, characters, etc. The party may or may not be able to take part in the stories themselves…)

This is a concept for the Worlds of Adventure hack (which I’ll link to in the comments), so keep in mind that drastic overhauls are the name of the game.

See the image for a description of how the new system would work. It replaces gaining XP from failed rolls, resolving Bonds, and meeting Drive/Alignment requirements (In fact, Quirks replace those entirely).

Objectives:

– Make XP a more active and interesting system, instead of the largely passive system it is now.

– Incorporate the various and disparate ways of gaining XP: Bonds, Drives, and failing rolls (introducing complications).

– Align storytelling, character motivations, moves, and bonds into a more cohesive system.

Here is an almost finished Artificer class that I’ve been working on for a few weeks and many hours now (with plenty of help from Yochai Gal, Muggins AU, and many others) . Originally made for Worlds of Adventure hack.

I wanted to make an Artificer class that wasn’t designed to drive the player to steampunk superhero, mad bomber gnome, etc., but instead allowed the player to be as inventive and creative as a magical inventor should be! While players can choose the specialties of Machinist, Alchemist, and Enchanter, they are free to make any kind of creation they want. (with GM fiat to require additional pre-requisites for the super-powerful creations).

I wanted the creation and usage of their gadgets to be core of the class, but I also wanted to help the player envision what a genius inventor in a fantasy world could be capable of, hence the “Child of the Renaissance” move. Please let me know what you think!

It will be called “Filthy Lucre”, and the focus is to give players more stuff to do with their hard won gold (and more creatures to take it from them).
