What is a Trap

What constitutes a Trap? Can a magic circle trap still be disabled by a Thief (i.e. step into the circle and your are trapped in it)? The moves says he can theoretically, but do you need other tools in the fiction too? Does a Thief has to know enough about magic to disable it?

If i use a lot of magical traps in my game, do i make the Thief more magical because of it?

Does the Thief have the “right” to try to find every kind of trap and disable it?

Trap Expert

When you spend a moment to survey a dangerous area, roll+DEX. ✴On a 10+, hold 3. ✴On a 7–9, hold 1. Spend your hold as you walk through the area to ask these questions:

Is there a trap here and if so, what activates it?

What does the trap do when activated?

What else is hidden here?

Tricks of the Trade

When you pick locks or pockets or disable traps, roll+DEX. ✴On a 10+, you do it, no problem. ✴On a 7–9, you still do it, but the GM will offer you two options between suspicion, danger, or cost.

Silver Gauntlet

There was an old dwarfen hero. A Thief really. He decided to woe a dwarfen girl and as it was tradition the dwarf that brought the biggest treasure would win her heart. Together with his human friend he went out and had many adventures. So rich was he, that he created a whole magical armor of gleaming silver to prepare for robbing the hoard of the biggest and strongest of the elemental dragons. This Gauntlet here looks a lot like this design.

The wearer of this Gauntlet can open any lock with ease and the simplest of tools. Just get the Gauntlet in proximity to it and it will go to work. However, it has a mind of it’s own and shouldn’t be close to valuables. It will reach for them and palm or pocket them without it’s wearer knowing about it. When the Guards catch them later, they will loose the Gauntlet AND the hand.

What happened to dwarfen thief you ask? Well, that is another story.

The Sound rod

This metal rod is maybe as long as your hand and made from a silvery material. When you push its one and only button the light at the top starts to glow and the rod emits a buzzing noise. Depending on the model the light might be blue or green. Just point the rod at the thing you want to manipulate, think what it should do and press the button. After having scanned an energy source or magical effect you can read out it’s potence and strengh by extending the rod.

For unknown purposes the rod might not work on wood and can only be used an arbitrary number of times.

At the beginning of the session, roll+INT

On a 10+ hold 3, on a 7-9 hold 2.

You can spend your hold 1 for 1 to make the rod do something. Reading energy outputs does not require an expenditure of hold.

The paper gloves

“These gloves are made of paper. Well not actuall paper, that wouldn’t work. Still – they look like paper, they smell and sound like paper… They are destroyed when they get wet. Still, i checked. I asked an alchemist. It’s not paper.

All the couriers of the Zsars postal brigade where them when they swoop around on their hippogriffs…

Now boy, listen to me because this is important. Never trust these couriers cause you see: These gloves are magical. And not made out of paper.

I saw one of these bastards handle a letter with these. When you just hold the letter for quite some time, the words apear on the paper of the glove! You can read any messeage this way without ever having to open the seal! When i saw that i took my club and beat this courier over the head. Pretty useful such a glove. Later i found out that they also translate! It showed an elvish letter to me but i could read it!

Just remember one thing.

They.Are.Not.Made.Of.Paper!”

The Whispering Cloak

A paranoid Lordqueen of the Golden Plains wished to know everything that happened, be it in her kingdom or her court. She payed 5 astromagicians their weight in gold and diamonds to create this cloak for her. While she was wearing this deep blue cape and hood with the embedded silver stars she could hear every whisper as loud as if it was spoken with clear voice. When she was alone with someone she could even hear what the people thought.

Of course it drove her insane after years of use.

A weird project but it might be helpful for a lot of people.

A weird project but it might be helpful for a lot of people. Haven’t finished reading it but i do not agree with everything in there. The spirit is good however and it could be helpful for d20 people.

Class Week is a chance for all the people that love Dungeon World to come together and be creative. Let’s share new content for the given class and discuss it’s fictional and mechanical possibilities. Let’s check the moves again in depth and see what can be done with them if applied creatively.

Any rules questions about them? We got you covered.

Class Week runs at the last of  every month.

July – THIEF WEEK!

Here are some suggestions of things from the community:

Puzzles.

Magic devices.

Applications for the Heist move.

Organizations as monsters?

Deconstruction of the archetype.  Why “Thief” and not “Rogue” or “Specialist” or w/e

What happens to thieves who steal from gods? (Maybe deal with Promethean themes.)

New poisons could be a lot of fun

I like the idea of discussing which fictional advantages the thief should be able to know. Like most classes would  _have to look through a room in_ depth to discern realities for a trap door, while a thief would merely have to _glance around to trigger the same  move._

How the class could do roles of ninja, assassination, mob boss, or beguiling con man.

Alternate/expanded roles might also include highwayman, pirate, spy, or detective.

Another thought is a way to get leverage for parley at a risk to the thief. The Phisher gambit.

Examples of Suspicion, Danger, and Cost for Tricks of the Trade.

Maybe some expanded thoughts or rules on loot (its value, where to fence it, etc)

_Alternatives to the poison  moves, because none of my thief players have ever used that._

_Examples of different Thieves Guilds and how to join, what they do._

Grifting for Fun and Profit

_I’d like to see a discussion of the Thief’s use of poisons._

Varieties of law enforcement (town guards, bounty hunters, mystical guardians). And different ways for characters to deal with them (bribery, corruption, truce). Good for both organized crime and individual Thieves!

“Official Schedule” of X Week
