Ludi Fabularum, the story game club I facilitate whereat I teach, continues this school year. We’re playing Dungeon World, and I’m fleshing out The Oracle’s Decree by Michael Prescott and Michael Atlin for the first session. Here’s a magic item the heroes might acquire, but probably at great risk.

Spear of Burning Blood: Gyo-ritt’s spear is a relic of his homeland, and it causes blood to catch on fire as if it were oil. When you draw blood with the Spear of Burning Blood in melee, roll+Str. On a 10+, your foe’s blood burns, automatically inflicting +1d6 damage until the fire is extinguished or the foe has no blood left to burn. On a 7-9, your foe suffers minor burns and discomfort. You deal your damage and gain +1 forward against that foe; the foe makes an attack against you.

The Sartar Duck

My eighth #Inktober drawing is a #DungeonWorld magic item, the Satar Duck.

Another magic item. I’m still behind.

I like the idea of this goofy, unassuming magic item. Fro! The description in the rulebook, he Sartar Duck is an odd, hand carved, wooden duck that makes the bearer an exceptionally gifted storyteller. Language itself is not even a barrier as those that hear the tail will get the general idea.

This one just seemed fun to draw.

I hope you like my attempt at drawing my take on this magic item from the core rulebook.

I’m participating in #Inktober this year leading up to the annual 24 hour #ExtraLife game marathon that I have been running in late October with my wife for the last five years. I’m going to draw monsters, weapons, and magic items from the #DungeonWorld rulebook and from the Dungeon World Codex (http://codex.dungeon-world.com).

If you like the drawings and would like to support me in Extra Life this year, you can donate to my campaign at http://www.extra-life.org/participant/jimjones.

You have my sincere appreciation if you do.

All the money that I raise goes directly to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. My youngest daughter, Rogue, had a life saving cranial reconstruction surgery at Riley when she was just a little over one year old. Today, she is a happy and healthy almost six year old who is thriving in kindergarten.

Let me know what you think.

My seventh #Inktober drawing is a #DungeonWorld magic item, the Flask of Breath..

I am still catching up, so I’ll probably do a couple of magic items.

This one is the Flask of Breath. It holds an I exhaustible source of air. I envision it as a simple flask that is wrapped in a dull grey shark skin unto which a simple brass plate, with a number of different size holes drilled through it, is affixed.

I hope you like my attempt at drawing my take on this magic item from the core rulebook.

The Deck of Many Things.

I didn’t know about this, really. I come from the side of RPGs that isn’t D&D and Pathfinder, but from what I gather it’s a somewhat controversial item. Some people think it’s truly amazing, and some people seem to hate it.

Has anyone tried to make a version for Dungeon World, and if so, what did it look like?

Immovable Rod

My fifth #Inktober drawing is a #DungeonWorld immovable rod.

I missed posting on Friday. I volunteered at two different functions and was on my feet for twelve hours. Needless to say there wasn’t much time to draw.

So, I tackled my first magic item, the immovable rod. I just love the idea of a simple rod with a button at one end that will stay where it is in space once the button is pressed and nothing move it. It struck me that a fun way to stumble across the rod would be coming across a well or vertical entrance to an underground complex with the rope of the party that last descended tied to the rod floating in place. Should you take the rod? What about the party down below? Why didn’t the return? Why would they use the rob versus anchoring against the well? Should your party go down and fund out?

H’la Hourglass (weight ½, unique)

H’la Hourglass (weight ½, unique)

Crawling in desperation in an ocean of burning sand, an orphaned baby found a crystalline pearl. The lustrous stone gave the baby shelter, nurture, warmth, and virtuosity in whatever the child needed. Little is known in this legend about the baby’s adulthood; only that when its mortal life was ending, the now elder creature made a pilgrimage. It sculpted this pearl into the shape of a minute hourglass, grinding the inside of the pearl to make the translucent grit that tells not time, but possibilities. A single grain that’s the purest of prisms can sometimes be seen flowing among the variegated shining whites of the sands in it. Stories recall this object as being able to can turn past into future, cold into hot, night into day, and even death into life.

Black Lotus

A potent and deadly hallucinogen. When you huff black lotus, you fall into a deep slumber. Roll+CON. On a 10+, you recover half your max HP and pick one. On a 7-9, the GM picks one, and you wake from a fugue hours or days later with no memory of the missing time. On a miss, take your Last Breath.

– The GM reveals a Grim Portent and how you can avoid or counter it.

– Your vision shows you something from the past or future, but you can’t remember what. You gain 1 hold. Any time you Discern Realities or Spout Lore, you can spend 1 hold to succeed as if you had rolled 12+.

– You catch a glimpse of your own death. Gain 1 hold. Any time you take damage, you can spend 1 hold to declare that the person, monster, or weapon that hit you won’t be the means of your demise.

– You have a rendezvous with Death. Tell us where you met. Take +1 forward the next time you take your Last Breath (+3 max).

If you survive, mark XP every time you willingly consume black lotus. When black lotus is available, you must Defy Danger to abstain. When you successfully abstain 3 consecutive times, you overcome the addiction—for now.

Sea Shell Shield (Worn, +1 Armor, 2 Weight)

A shield of incredibly intricacy formed from thousands of broken shells. When a piece of shell is broken off and left at a location, the sound of the area around the shell can be heard emanating from the break on the shield. The sound is faint, distorted and distant how ever and all but the loudest noises are incomprehensible.
