I’ve gotten a friend to start running DW, ever since I first ran it I knew this was the system for him and how he really wants to run games.  So I’m playing a Druid and last night each player received a magic item and mine was an ancient cold iron gladius.  As I’ve never actually created a magic item for DW before I figured I would post it for comment:

Given that Mouse the Thief recognized The Storm’s Eye from old City Urchin folk stories, and intends to drag it out of the Sorcerer-Fiend’s Esotericum… it needs a small write up for my personal notes. And hey, given that Ozymandias the Paladin kept his lost sister’s journals as a sign of his previous life before the order… this is the perfect time for a move, methinks.

The Storm’s Eye

Weight 6

This blue, multi-faceted jewel stands the height of an armored knight, and is cut most irregularly — it is lopsided, and pitted in places. However, none of this detracts from its beauty; it glows with an internal light, and shines regardless of how the light strikes it. This glow, like its form, is irregular — some of its faces gleam like polished mail, while others remain dark and cloudy for quite some time before igniting again.

This monolithic gemstone’s magic comes from an ancient, wrathful storm elemental trapped within. When gazing into its faces, one can view the site of any rainfall — as all storms are the children of this very, very old elemental — and one can scrutinize that scene from the perspective of any drop of rain or flake of snow just by willing it; one can observe these faraway places as though they were actually standing there.

When you are looking for something and spend time staring into the Storm’s Eye, roll+WIS. On a 10+, you find someone important to you or something that you’ve been looking for and they’re not that far out of the way. On a 7-9, you see someone or something you’ve been looking for, and choose two:

>it’s not in immediate danger

>it’s not too far out of the way

>you recognize where it is

Help me come up with stats for this magical artifact my players grabbed!

Help me come up with stats for this magical artifact my players grabbed! I wanted a cursed item with both upsides and downsides. It was pulled off of an extra-planar nightmare-dragon who hates gods and enjoys devouring souls.

Nightmare Wing Cloak (1 weight)

Torn from the flesh of the fallen nightmare lord, Ror’gosh, this sinewy black cape immediately bonds itself to the wearers neck once fastened.

Last game session, one of the characters suggested looting the bodies of their fallen companions, and I of course didn’t dissuade but I did point out they were trying to catch an escaping Sorcerer-Fiend. I pointed out that this delay would increase his lead.

Overall, the party opted to continue the chase, but I figure they’ll come back for the loot later. With that in mind, I took the liberty of rolling up treasure for their fallen opponents so far.

There’s some coin, some small valuables, and three magical items!

So, I need ideas for these…

•A minor magical item kept by the scimitar wielding mercenary Gwen

•A strange and maybe magical item kept by Neal the druid of the Frozen Northlands

•A magical item belonging to a Dark Elf warrior/knight

For the Minor item belonging to the mercenary, I was thinking a coin bag that growls when fake coinage is deposited inside. This answer will probably be bumped by asking the characters what little blessing or trinket Gwen carried with her.

For the strange/magic item, I was thinking of offering a weird sculpture that’s a focus for his druid powers. Maybe something my party’s Druid could meditate on to learn a Frozen Northland essence to shapeshift into??

I’m not sure about a magic item for the ancient Dark Elf!

Help and thoughts?

In the last session, our Paladin, Augustine, went from being a servant of the light god to a servant of the Great Gator. The Great Gator blessed him, turning his plate mail green. What other effect did this have on the armor? The only idea I have so far is allowing him to swim like a gator.

Maker’s Map

Not uncommon amongst Archeologists and Historians, when the map is placed flat and any type of hand crafted item is placed upon it, the map will then show the location the raw material(s) used to make the item were gathered from, if the map encompasses those locations.

The Map will make it clear where each material came from if it can, i.e. obsidian for an axe might be mined far from where the wood for the handle was cut.

The Heart of K’z’kk’d the Soul Ripper

The Heart of K’z’kk’d the Soul Ripper

The Heart of K’z’kk’d the Soul Ripper

The Heart is a large faceted lump of onyx, cut in a conventional poetic heart-shape. It glows blackly with the spirit of K’z’kk’d the Soul Ripper. While the spirit is in your possession, gain the following moves:

Soul Rip

When you reach into a creature and rip its soul from its body, roll +CON

*On a 10+ you pull the soul from the target’s body and hold it in your grasp. It may attempt to bargain with you for its continued existence; do with it what you will.

*On a 7-9 the creature takes D6 damage, ignoring physical armour. If this kills the creature, you hold the soul (as per 10+), otherwise the creature makes an attack against you.

Consume Soul

When you consume a held soul, it feels great; you cackle or otherwise exult with the power. Take +1 forward to your next three rolls.

Transformation

Each time you level up having consumed a spirit:

• Remove a vowel from your name.

• The following transformations occur in turn:

1. Your back legs become hairy and goat-like, your eyes have glowing red pupils,

2. You grow Bull/Cow-like horns, and to 1 ½  times your current size,

3. You grow a second pair of arms, and to 1 ½  times your current size,

4. You have the head of a Bull/Cow, and to 1 ½  times your current size; you have transformed into the form of K’z’kk’d.

Each time you level up thereafter, you grow to 1 ½  times your current size, until you reach 30 feet tall.

Also, roll + WIS:

* On a 7+ your alignment doesn’t become “evil”.

K’z’kk’d the Soul Ripper

K’z’kk’d dwells in a labyrinth-enclosed underworld tower, eating souls, enacting eldritch rituals, performing radical surgery, and excising surplus vowels. The tower’s denizens include innumerable imps, gargantuan hounds, and the various companions and playthings he has constructed and animated by those souls which have impressed, bargained or pleaded successfully to avoid their immediate consumption.

K’z’kk’d has secured his essence into the Heart. When in his own realm, he can possess nearby creatures or animate constructed bodies – his usual form is that of a gigantic four-armed Minotaur. He returns to the Heart on the body’s destruction, whatever the distance and regardless of the Heart’s location.

It has been known for act of warfare, betrayal, or theft to remove the Heart from its home in the underworld and it come to the realm of men. K’z’kk’d’s spirit (if returned to the Heart) will endeavour to seduce the owner with dreams of power. Give the above moves sheet to the Heart’s owner – K’z’kk’d describes and instructs the owner in the use of its/his powers, neglecting only to mention that K’z’kk’d will be able possess the transformed body (in order to return home) once the transformation is complete.

Note: The moves apply equally to “Spirits” as they do to “Souls”, should the distinction matter in your game, in which case Souls are rather more tasty.

The Orange Grimoire

This wondrous item looks like a box with a grid of alphabetic keys, a small screen and a handle.

When you explain your predicament and press the button marked ‘Spell’, roll +INT

On 10+, the Orange Grimoire speaks a spell. The GM decides what effect it has.

On 7-9, the spell cast has one or more side effects.

On 6-, you forget a useful word forever. The GM chooses which one.
