Grab Bag of Equipment Tags

As part of a different project, I generated a list of 200 or so tags for magical equipment and the like.

Note that this is not the same as a universal list of tags. It would be a useful project to generate a list of existing or tested tags that can be used for general purposes. That is not this list.

In making this list, I went for the quirky, the unusual, and the interesting rather than the broadly useful. This means that some of the tags would probably be better expressed as custom moves or item descriptions. It’s also not completionist or exhaustive.

One useful way to use this list is to pick a tag and rewrite it as something more specific or more general. Maybe the flaming sword affects the user too, or the sword that cuts through metal can only be stopped by leather or cloth. Or you can take the tag as inspiration and write a move that has a specific mechanical effect.

The document is editable by everyone, so feel free to add your own additions.

The Hunger of the Crimson Canopy – A staff made of dark colored living wood. On command, the staff grows sharp vines which penetrate the wielder and drink their blood. This causes 1d4+1 damage and the caster gains hold equal to the damage dealt as the staff grows a blood red leaf for each damage dealt. The damage dealt from the staff cannot be healed until the hold is spent and the caster has rested for at least a day. The staff holds a piece of the caster’s life essence during this time period. A small echo of their spirit resides within.

What kinds of things could the staff do?

From the Dungeon World core rulebook: When making your own magic items keep in mind that these items are magical. Simple modifiers, like +1 damage, are the realm of the mundane—magic items should provide more interesting bonuses. And in principle I ……

So, I just had a read through the magic items in the core book, which I had previously only skimmed.

So many wonderful easter eggs. I think the Fiasco Codex is my favorite.

The Thousand Blades

“The officers surrounded the Shadow Thief, and his hands flew into the sleeves of his robe. As he extended his hands, it was as if a thousand blades sprung from his fingertips and into my men’s armor, and they crumbled as wheat before the scythe…”

This silk robe has long sleeves and many small pockets concealed within it. When worn for the first time, 3d6 magical throwing knives appear within the robe’s sleeves and myriad pockets. These can be drawn and thrown only by the wearer. Additionally, the wearer may Blot Out the Sun with the throwing knives, as if he had the ranger move of the same name.

When the wearer of the Thousand Blades steals a treasure from someone wealthy and gives away the profits to the poor, the robe recharges, and another 3d6 throwing knives may be drawn from it. Any leftover knives from the previous draw are lost, unless the number remaining is greater than the amount rolled on the new draw.

Quentin’s Bloody Scabbard

Quentin’s Bloody Scabbard

Quentin’s Bloody Scabbard

(minor magical item, weight 0)

Generations ago, there lived a renowned bard. His stories were irreverent, even crude, and well-known for their graphic content. This adventuresome bard lived a life of over-the-top violence until his dying day, and in that time nothing — no armor, no magic — could stop his blade. Legend holds that the buckets of blood his enemies lost remains in the leather of this ornate, exotic scabbard, cleaning and maintaining any sword it holds.

Any slightly-curved sword sheathed within will be maintained by the magic of the scabbard, and any weathering or damage will be repaired. When drawn, it can cut through anything given enough time. It won’t ignore armor, but it will penetrate otherwise impossible obstacles such as a dragon’s scales or a castle’s walls.

The sword in question must fit the exotic curved scabbard, obviously, and any conditions that would mar the sword’s perfection, or ruin its ability to give off a bitchin’ lens flare negates this magic.

Someone mentioned that the Band Chimera had a new album out called Corwn of Phantoms.

Sounds like a kick ass magic item to me.

How many cool ideas can we scrounge together from various metal albums or band names?

Places, the names of Dungeons, Magic items?

The Staff Of Infinite Interns

close, two-handed, 1 weight

Any sorcerer knows, it’s not like it used to be – when every blacksmith’s son was eager to take on an apprenticeship in hopes of a better life. Nowadays, any simple peasant can pass the entrance exam to a community college – most of which have at least one hedge mage in the faculty. Even worst wizarding students demand titles and paychecks directly upon graduation. What’s a poor wizard to do?

When the staff is held aloft and the command word is spoken, it vanishes in a cloud of nebulous dust which then coalesces into a random hireling. The hireling looks, acts, and feels just like any living being; they require food and shelter. Upon summoning, the intern believes this to be the first day of their internship. If the hireling is ever grievously injured, they disappear in another cloud of dust and the staff reappears in their place.

If there’s anything I’ve been doing wrong as far as posting is concerned, let me know.

EDIT: That’s strange, it just showed back up! False, bizarre alarm

More topically, here’s a magic item I made with a mechanic I’m not sure about, an automatically granted Defy Danger roll. Interested in any feedback.

ISTAAN’S STANDARD

This is a ragged banner tied to a spear. Punched through with arrowholes and stained with crusting blood, it was held once by a heroic captain whose unit was betrayed by a jealous superior and slaughtered to a man by a barrage of his own force’s arrows.

The banner has been through so many desperate and victorious campaigns and been witness to such a cruel betrayal that something of the battlefield remains inside it. It can be held, or used as a cape or cloak.

When the user holds or wears Istaan’s Standard in combat, it flaps and flags as if a full wind was blowing it, regardless of weather conditions. The fabric will gladly and readily drag through mud or blood, but has a peculiar distate for water, blowing away from it and lying as flat against the user’s back as possible when it rains. Arrows fired at the user are miraculously caught and tangled in the frayed fabric, slowing or even stopping them, and those who wear it find its threads catch at their ear and pull their heads round when an unseen threat creeps up on them.

Treat this protection as an automatically rolled Defy Danger, modified by the user’s +CHA or +1 (the Standard’s Dexterity Modifier), whichever is higher.

Istaan’s Standard abhors dishonesty and treachery in all their forms, and if the user lies or deceives someone, it will bodily attempt to throttle them (although its grip is fairly weak).

Once it calms down a little, it will trip them up and do its best to get in their way, giving a -1 ongoing to any physical action. This continues until the user removes the Standard or properly atones, in a way fitting the Banner’s (and the GM’s) judgment.
