From the Dungeon World core rulebook: When making your own magic items keep in mind that these items are magical. Simple modifiers, like +1 damage, are the realm of the mundane—magic items should provide more interesting bonuses. And in principle I ……

What follows are my observations regarding the Dungeon World game that I ran at Michiana Board Gamers. The other post was already ridiculously long, so I’m splitting it up. Observations The Namer First and foremost, the Namer is an interesting … Continue…

And once again, Dungeon World provided the ingredients for a fantastic one-shot experience. For me, the secret is in letting the players pick from the plethora of playbooks and letting those interactions roll around. In particular it is helpful to ……

I’m struggling with the flow of combats.

I’m struggling with the flow of combats.

I’m struggling with the flow of combats. Some of the combats devolve into what feels like hack and slash marathons – lots of 10+ rolls for minimal damage. This is particularly manifest when one character is fighting a singular monster.

I’ve been playing these combats as “okay character keep pressing the initiative…you’ve got free reign.”

Should I be making soft moves in between a successful hack and slash?

One of the things that I’m loving about the plethora of Dungeon World playbooks is the constraints.

One of the things that I’m loving about the plethora of Dungeon World playbooks is the constraints. When we kick off a session, and select the playbooks, I like to look and ask myself “How will this collection of playbooks make the world different and unique?”

In last night’s session, the world only had fairy magic. No other magic. It is very likely that the only healing spell is from the Fae:

Wish

When you grant a mortal’s wish, spend 1 Boon and roll +Wis. *On a 10+, you may choose up to 3. *On a 7-9, you may choose up to 2.

• The wish seems to give them what they want.

• The wish gives them what they need.

• You may choose whether the wish later brings them misfortune or not.

• You choose whether the wish has an immediate unpleasant side effects or not.

We’ve had a session with the Engine of Destruction, Mutant, Earthling, and Priest. Gods and technology, but no arcana.

In essence, I’m saying “What if the playbook power sources are it?”

You can find reference to the playbooks here:

If you want me to add one, let me know (I don’t possibly know of all of them)

When you present an esoteric object to the Gearhouse and ask a resident for information about that item, Roll+CHA. On a 10+, pick 2. On a 7-9, pick 1. On a 6-, you still pick one but its more complicated than that.

– They are interested in owning it

– They will treat you fairly

– They will tell you its function and a little known fact about it

I was trying to figure out how to do a Wand of Wonder in Dungeon World. I suppose I could simply grab the table and translate that.

Thoughts?

Wand of Wonder

When you aim the wand of wonder and unleash its magic, choose something from the list:

  – Summon something

  – Transform something

  – Blast something

Then roll. On a hit tell the GM more about what you just did. If you:

  – Summoned something, its friendly towards you

  – Transformed something, its permanent

  – Blast something, it takes 1d10 damage

On a 7-9, that and pick one and the GM will tell you more:

  – Its out of place

  – It has unforseen side effects

  – It is significantly weaker

On a 6-, what have you unleashed?!? The GM will tell you.

Today, Mark Daniels and I are releasing our Take on the Lower Depths, a supplement that explores some of the untouched lower depths of Dungeon World.

Unlike previous endeavors, where I dutifully combed the dark recesses of the public domain artwork, Mark illustrated some truly spectacular creatures.

This project began as my attempt to convert Wolfgang Bauer’s Dungeon Magazine adventure “Kingdom of Ghouls.” It quickly became obvious, based on that adventure, that I’d need to create a whole lot more. It has moved beyond that point, but its roots are still firmly entrenched in the bones of that spectacular adventure.

Special thanks to +Josh Mannon , +Adam Koebel, and +Colter Hanna for you assistance. I will be petitioning the Dungeon World Steering Committee to add face as a range tag.
