Things i learned from the IRL Dungeon World game this week.

#1 i need to describe more. The group decided to make camp and one player immediately said he wanted to Discern Realities  Because there was nothing i had established it was a bit awkward  Had i described their camping place i would have had more to work with. The player asked what here is not what it seems to be. I told him that the snow berries (normally being used to heal people) in this area have been warped and contain tiny thorns inside that would tear up your throat.

The Sky Dancer then went on a scouting flight to discern the realities of the entrance to the Orc cave. Once again i gave basically no description of the place before he asked his first question. I had it in my mind but i didn’t describe it in any way. We used the questions of the player to better define the orc defenses and the tactical options they had. After the questions we all had a pretty good idea about the place but it could have gone much better.

#2 The Sky Dancer is an excellent Scout and having a flying character from level 1 is really cool.

#3 I tried really hard to keep Johnstone Metzger s advice in mind about the Defense Move. The Dwarf Barbarian was fired at  with flaming arrows. He buried his giant sword in the ground and hid behind it. He choose to take half damage and open up the archer to attacks. (the last thing maybe a bit much) so he took half damage and no damage afterward even though the orc was still firing at him. The Skydancer used that moment to fire an arrow at the orc and then knock him down the watchtower.

The same thing on a Hack&Slash, the fighter was fighting with an orc but didn’t kill him with the move. The kept on fighting but my next move couldn’t just be “he goes for another attack”, i had to change the situation so i used the “attack unrelentless” move and described the orc hacking with double speed, going total berserk without defending and “what do you do”

#4 I still need to ask more questions next session. We took a lot of time creating characters, especially because we had a total RPG newby with us so i wanted to get into the action fast. We still don’t know much about the Skydancers and Fighters Race.

#5 The Orc berserker has a “mutations” special quality. I took that as a hint, especially because the players talked about the orcs warping normal animals into beasts, to mean that the orcs had a lot of biomagic and transformation magic. That’s why there were two mutated orcs, one with 3 arms and a transformation magic shaman. He had a Mr. Fantastic Rubber Arm and hit the Dwarf Barbarian with a magic pulver – granting the Dwarf extra knees (and a DEX debility).

#6 now i have to write dungeon fronts for the orc cave/fortress

#7 I need to think about why the orcs are doing what they are doing and in that, don’t fall into the same story structure i usually do. The player characters fail to prevent some ritual or to defeat a big dangerous enemy and have to flee to  prepare and fight another day. It’s not planned by me but it happend in 3 games now. I will try to not do that so there is no big godzilla monster waiting under the cave.

#8 Oh BTW. the orcs have yeti allies (yay 6- Spout Lore)

Do you use Apocalypse World style “love letters” in your Dungeon World game at all? And how do you use them?

I’m a few session behind but I finally posted up a summary of my first session as a DW GM.

I’m a few session behind but I finally posted up a summary of my first session as a DW GM.  The Underwatch is getting it’s 5th session this weekend.  I hope to get some more reports done in short order to catch up.

Let me know what you think.

I’ll be starting my second GM of DW tomorrow, and this time it looks like it’s going to be a long-term game.

I’ll be starting my second GM of DW tomorrow, and this time it looks like it’s going to be a long-term game. We haven’t done character creation yet, but I got them to choose their class, at least, so I’d know what abilities to expect. I have six players! I hope that’s not too crowded yet.

* The one guy who took my option to preserve his character from our one-shot has a thief with 5xp. His deal with Death (he had to do a last breath last time) is the basis for my only adventure front so far.

* Another guy who was in the one-shot is going for the free barbarian found in the website. I find it odd that the bbn has less hp than a fighter, but that’s probably just my dnd sensibilities kicking in. Nevertheless I’m excited to see it on action.

* The other four characters are bard, druid, ranger and wizard. I haven’t seen the wizard yet, but it’s the class I’ve been meaning to use as a player so it’s exciting. 😀 Also, the bardic healing seems… Spammable. I’m eager to see if I can limit that through game fiction without having the player feeling gimped.

Wish me luck!

In my most recent session, the druid was conversing with the fighter about the nature and habits of animals.

In my most recent session, the druid was conversing with the fighter about the nature and habits of animals. Based on the discussion, I ended up taking the following notes:

– There is a lot of fish politics

– Octopuses have some loyalty, but not much

– Birds think they are better than everyone, they are dicks and have no loyalty

I just felt like that was worth sharing. This is often how my DW sessions go, and I love it.

Today my daughter saved a poisoned centaur, killed an owlbear in one blow, was thrown out a window by a telekenetic bandit lord, fought a man who’s face was in his chest and defeated the chaos ooze that was poisoning the village water supply and giving all the cattle fish scales and bat wings. All in a days work.

Seven moons encircle the great dead world, Algol.  On one such moon, Suspiria, does our saga begin.

Garth, a technician, dedicated to turning himself into a machine, reactivates the aeons-old robot soldier Olympia and together with Sharath, an exiled soldier of the Imperial Guard, they travel the Malachite Wastes in search of lost technology and adventure.

They rescue the Princess of the White Fortress from a platoon of Saurian marauders and become entangled in a conflict that may decide the fate of all life on Suspiria.

My players loved it.  I was a bit suprised no-one went for the Earthling (we ended up with an Android Tecnician, an Engine of Destruction and an Alien Fighter), and wondered how play would progress without the big staple of planetary romance.

No problems at all.  Everyone was soon swept up in the weird-pulp culture that developed.    We even got to finish on an old school cliff-hanger, with a reptiloid army about to attack the White Fortress, the Alien Fighter poisoned by a scheming traitor and the Engine and Tecnnician locked in an old laboratory that began to fill with caustic gas (also by very busy scheming traitor).

Thanks Johnstone Metzger , two thumbs up.  Would play again.

I never cease to be amazed by the crazy shit that transpires in these games.

I never cease to be amazed by the crazy shit that transpires in these games. Last night, the virulently anti-undead cleric is being subtly corrupted by a necromancer’s staff that his ancestral deity let him use, and ended up raising a defeated Mohrg to do his bidding, convinced that it would be okay if he only used the undead to serve his ancestors. The PCs were chasing a couple of vampires through a mine, and I had all sorts of ideas for mischief they were going to make, but the ranger ended up dropping one with a high damage roll shot (and claiming his Blood Bow, thanks to the members of this community who made up that item) and the Paladin ended up catching the other in a sprint and lopping off her head (this is the second time the PCs have done that to this particular vampire; massive damage with his quest boon). Later, the same Paladin tried to ride the Druid, in warg form, into battle with a skeletal crocodilian to fairly disastrous result.
