Inverse World and fictional advancement

So many ways for the Inverse World captain to enhance the ship are purely coming from the fiction. Therefore they are hidden from you, when you first look at the class. Sure you could get a more powerful “engine” to increase your control stat. But who thinks of this? There is no “upgrade the airship” system and we as roleplayers are trained to look for these things. If advancement is mainly mechanical then fictional options get ignored (because i a lot of systems those don’t even work). Therefore some players see it as cheating if you bypass the “1 move per Level” thing and get extra moves or stuff from the fiction.

Did you know that you could put extra armor plates on your airship in order to get Armor for your Airship? The only hint that this could work is the one advancement options that makes your airship immune to armor ignoring attacks. This option literally makes no sense unless you invest in game time and ressources to getting armor!

So the captain has actually a lot of inbuilt motivation to use the trade move etc. to get coin.

There is a lot of hidden chances there. I am not sure how you could address this on the character sheet though. How to point people at these chances?

So, Tim Franzke posted something about playing Wonder Woman as a Sky Dancer, and it got me thinking: what classes would you use to play superheroes? I personally think the themes of Inverse World are the best to explore this concept.

JLA

Superman: It’s tough to fit Superman into just one class, but I’d probably say Sky Dancer for him, seeing as flying’s really important to him. Alternatively, make him a Golem (a good fit if you also want Wonder Woman in the group) to focus more on the Man of Steel aspect (pun totally intended).

Batman: I think the Collector is the best fit here. “But what about the Walker!” I hear you say. I have one response: utility belt. Add in Wealth and Taste for his alter ego, and Curiosity for the super-sleuthing and it’s a good fit.

Wonder Woman: I agree with Tim here, Sky Dancer works well to capture the flavor.

Green Lantern: Lantern, duh. Not much to say here.

The Flash: The Walker. Take the Great Nations Training and re-flavor so you’re running up walls and ceilings.

Aquaman: I think Survivor’s the best choice out of the bunch, especially if you choose the “limb replaced” option to get a hook. Alternatively, you could be a Captain, who hails from cities within the Cloud Seas. (Bonus: the Captain can also get a hook for a hand!)

Martian Manhunter: Putty Golem or a Rainlord, to focus on the mutability and alien nature. A divine messenger is probably as close as you’ll get to a Martian in Invells.

Now, to fully capture the flavor of each class, you’ll probably want to take advantage of the multiclass moves each class has. Let me know what you think!

What do you envision the default climate of Invells to be?

What do you envision the default climate of Invells to be?

What do you envision the default climate of Invells to be?  I tend to picture something a bit overly humid, what with rain coming in at least two directions after all, and a sun that never fully “sets.”

What about you? Can it snow in Invells? Where? Why?

With the new release of Inverse World, I want to play a game. Typically.

I’ll be hosting a PBP game of Inverse World, perhaps as a one shot or an extensive game I haven’t decided yet, for four to five players. If anyone is interested, comment here. If I can get minimum of three interested participants by the end of the weekend, I’ll set it up. Details below –  ————————————————————————————————

All Inverse World Playbooks will be available.

All characters will start at level 3, simply because I like the idea of having a couple of extra moves to really have a go at the playbook.

Races will work as Inverse World rules, so go wild.

It’s entirely possible the setting I have in mind will be somewhat swampy. So, maybe keep that in mind upon creation. ((Ancient Ruins Golem, for example?)) but don’t feel this limits you. I’ll be creating the world around the characters you supply.

Oh yeah, heads up: Jacob Randolph has a completed copy of Inverse World Accelerated.

To pass the time until then, here’s one of the sample characters! If you still have time left over afterward, try reading it again.

Little Agatha

Little Agatha is a veteran bug collector. Flying bugs, glowing bugs singing bugs, dancing bugs, fire-breathing bugs, she’s caught ’em all. Everyone treats her like an old grandma, but cross her friends and you’ll be reminded how scary grandmas can get.

High Concept: Cheerful Bug Lady

Trouble: Grandma Elemental

Other Aspects: Been There, Done That; Tougher Than I Look; I Need To Care For Avon

Approaches

Careful: Good (+3)

Clever: Fair (+2)

Flashy: Average (+1)

Forceful: Average (+1)

Quick: Mediocre (+0)

Sneaky: Fair (+2)

Stunts

Stun Spore: Because some of her pet butterflies carry numbing powder, Agatha gets +2 to Sneakily creating advantages related to numbing and paralysis.

Trained Insects: Many of Agatha’s bugs have been trained to accomplish practical tasks. Twice per session, she can produce one of them for a free boost.

(may take one more stunt without reducing refresh)
