The Binder – Version 2.0 / Minimalist Version

Some of you may remember the original Binder from a few months back. Here is the heavily modified version 2.0! Minimalized!

I’ve been thinking about an alternative ruleset for Ability Scores & Modifiers.

I’ve been thinking about an alternative ruleset for Ability Scores & Modifiers.

Specifically, simplifying them by replacing the Ability Score with a simple modifier. It would look like this:

Playbooks would have example scores as they do now, but with pure modifiers and no stat numbers. They would pick one stat with +2, two with +1, two with +0, and one with -1.

To calculate HP: Each class gets 12 HP as default, they then add their class limit + 2 x their CON.

So a Barbarian would have 12+8+4, or 24.

Players would add +1 to any stat every odd level up.

Curious as to any thoughts y’all might have about the overall idea. Thanks!

PS: I’m aware this isn’t a particularly original idea; if there is a DW-specific version of this ruleset out there, I’d love to see it! Thanks.

Question for Victor Julio Hurtado or anyone familiar with Dwarfare Games Mage playbook:

I’m super confused about Ranks. Here’s what I understand:

You start with 3 ranks you can apply to any school you wish; on a level up you gain +1 Rank in a previously researched school.

You get a list of abilities for each school you’ve researched, and you can upgrade those using Rank – but it costs 3 Ranks to get there, and then that school is maxed out. So really, schools only have two sets of spell-lists; the ones you get when you start, and then the second set when you spend 3 rank.

However, you can only “spend” all 3 rank within a school at levels 6-10; before that you’re treading water, gaining rank.

Is that correct?

Let’s say I have a Mage that put all her Rank into Abjuration at the start, she couldn’t “spend” all 3 to become an Abjurer, and get the final spells list? She’d have to wait until level 6, right? Is this meant to encourage research into other schools?

Thanks

Good Wizard alternatives?

Good Wizard alternatives?

Hello all. I’d love to offer my players a magic using class similar to the one from Freebooters on the Frontier; basically the player can cast spells of their choosing, based on type (Offensive, Defensive, etc). I’d love for the Wizard to be as easy to play for newbies as the other classes, but with a stronger focus on imagination.

I’ve seen the Mage variations on DTRPG, but they haven’t quite hit it. Victor Julio Hurtado’s Mage (http://tabletopvault.com/dwarfaregames/2016/11/the-mage/) got close, but it is far too complicated for what I am looking for. Any pointers?

Dungeon World Syllabus

So, I’ve been working on a sort of “Syllabus” for new Dungeon World GMs (like myself) – all the “best of” documents I’ve found from around the interwebs – with or without Google Drive links. I’ve also created two semi-useful docs, one around “Opening Scenes” for the first session, and another with a list of useful questions to ask during worldbuilding. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts, as well as contributions!

Thanks
