Good Wizard alternatives?

Hello all. I’d love to offer my players a magic using class similar to the one from Freebooters on the Frontier; basically the player can cast spells of their choosing, based on type (Offensive, Defensive, etc). I’d love for the Wizard to be as easy to play for newbies as the other classes, but with a stronger focus on imagination.

I’ve seen the Mage variations on DTRPG, but they haven’t quite hit it. Victor Julio Hurtado’s Mage (http://tabletopvault.com/dwarfaregames/2016/11/the-mage/) got close, but it is far too complicated for what I am looking for. Any pointers?

  1. last week, we saw a ritual happen in a bar. The bar was a “place of power” over very specific domains — booze — and the ritual was about that.

Maybe that? Encourage the players to tell you the way in which a place is of power, and how it resonates with the ritual being considered.

  2. I see what you did there. So, each time I’d ask them to explain why this is a PoP; I think eventually it would lose its RP potential… they’d end up paying lip service, perhaps. Still, interesting.

  3. So, in re-reading the preview of the Mage I referenced in the original post, it actually seems far improved from the first time I saw it. I think I’m going to buy it and try it out.

  4. If you are worried about coming up with places of power, just give them something that they can take with them. Portable Wizard Tower is my go to when I want them to have a portable base/place of power.

  5. You’ve seen the wizard sans spell list playbook right? For me, that’s the happy medium between full Vancian and full freeform casting. Tell us what your spell does, but pick from a list of a few mechanical effects.

  6. Its a good medium. But to be honest, not my favorite. I believe the ritual move to be the most elegant move there is. Doesn’t have to even be arcana!
