Question for Victor Julio Hurtado or anyone familiar with Dwarfare Games Mage playbook:

I’m super confused about Ranks. Here’s what I understand:

You start with 3 ranks you can apply to any school you wish; on a level up you gain +1 Rank in a previously researched school.

You get a list of abilities for each school you’ve researched, and you can upgrade those using Rank – but it costs 3 Ranks to get there, and then that school is maxed out. So really, schools only have two sets of spell-lists; the ones you get when you start, and then the second set when you spend 3 rank.

However, you can only “spend” all 3 rank within a school at levels 6-10; before that you’re treading water, gaining rank.

Is that correct?

Let’s say I have a Mage that put all her Rank into Abjuration at the start, she couldn’t “spend” all 3 to become an Abjurer, and get the final spells list? She’d have to wait until level 6, right? Is this meant to encourage research into other schools?

Thanks

When you start with the mage, you get 3 ranks. You can spend these ranks as you see fit; this means that you could spend then all in one school or spread them out into different schools. As a mage you have to do a bit of planning ahead of time. Do you specialize in one school and later research them in game or sacrifice specialization for versatility so you start with access to as many schools as possible without having to research them ingame.

Going by the magic research move: You dont need ranks to research a school, what you need is time. If you spend about two weeks researching the school from a reliable source (such as a school, teacher, or book) you add that school to your “researched list” this means that if you have unspent ranks or the next time you gain a rank, you can spend it to gain a spell from that school.

You would have to wait until level 6 to do it. This is to encourage researching other schools as you mentioned, but if the player wishes to save some ranks to spend on the abjurer move once tehy can take it, that shouldn’t be a problem.
