Praise the Captain!

Yesterday i got the chance to play a Captain for a session and i highly highly enjoyed it. While the “everyone just rolls +control” thing looks really boring on paper it actually creates a lot of cool moments and choices. When my captain was doing things himself, with help from the crew i would get to roll +3. But i couldn’t be everywhere. Still i can roll for the other crewmembers and basically make the ship my second character. I just would need to roll +1 (+2 if assign crew to the task). In that sense the trained crew enhancement i picked up kind of function like the “All powers to the shields!” thing in Star Trek. Giving you a little ressource to play around with. We didn’t get the chance to have other player characters do much on the ship but the struggle between using the ship and rolling lower or using your high stats seems interesting. Also there is a lot of fictional advancement you can pick up for the ship, giving you a quest an an incentive to trade and make money.

While i find a lot of the advanced moves to be a bit unexiting at reading them, this class felt like i didn’t push for advanced moves to be awesome. I had a freaking airship with Glaivethrowers.

So i was a happy Captain.

Cool class.

Check it out everyone.

Hey, why does the poor Druid lack choices for what their body looks like?

Hey, why does the poor Druid lack choices for what their body looks like? They feature choices for Eyes, Head, and Clothing, but not body type like most others.

When you go into battle, roll+WIS. ✴On a 10+, name someone who will live and someone who will die. ✴On a 7-9, name someone who will live or someone who will die. Name NPCs, not player characters.

What does qualify as battle?

I wanted to make a kind of ‘magic berserker” class for a while now, and, while I don’t have many advanced moves (yet… hopefully!), I have the starting moves to show and get some feedback.

As a side note, I like gimmicks, and stat drain to power moves seemed do-able. Especially since the core rulebook actually has modifier equivalents to scores lower than 8, something that sees little to no play, from my (limited, mind you) experience.

Remove debilitating effects from friends and inflict them upon your foes. But don’t just stop there, make them more potent and spread them like the plague.

A pox be upon you!

Did anybody think of new paths or a Death Move for Peter Johansen’s monk?

Here are my first drafts of some of the racial classes for my Eberron conversion.

Here are my first drafts of some of the racial classes for my Eberron conversion. A few things: one of the big things about the new races in Eberron is how their viewpoint is different from the “normal” races like dwarves and elves. To simulate that, I’ve given each of these classes (except the Dragonmarked) different questions for Discern Realities. I’m especially curious of what you think of them.

Attributions: Obviously, I was inspired by Andri Erlingsson’s Elf, Dwarf, & Halfling. A lot of the Changeling’s advanced moves are from Jeremy Friesen’s Mountebank class. The Shifter draws inspiration from various *World interpretations of werewolves, including those from Monsterhearts and Urban Shadows. The Kalashtar nabs some moves from Inverse World’s Lantern, and the Mechanic and Survivor are strong inspirations for the Warforged. The Noble (I’m not exactly sure who made the Noble?) was the source of a couple of moves for the Dragonmarked.

Geez, that’s a lot, huh? Anyways, let me know what you think!

#Shaper  was the #DungeonWorld  class I wrote that changed most through playtesting.

#Shaper  was the #DungeonWorld  class I wrote that changed most through playtesting. I am indebted to Chris Sakkas and his contribution of The Truenamer in Extracts from Stone & Shadow from Grim Portents Issue 1 as the source of the base move’s mechanic. That heritage is still evident in the move Speak a True Name. Sculpt Reality and many of the advance moves owes more to fictional characters like Galadriel, Lanre, or Lyra. Try it and let me know how you like it!

#WesterosDungeonWorld  Last fall, I created a #DungeonWorld  campaign setting inspired by the world George R. R. Martin created for A Song Of Ice And Fire. My campaign setting is set on the continent of Westeros during the protracted struggle between the children of the forest and the First Men, a time when the singers of the songs of the earth and the magic they wielded were both significantly more powerful. All the base classes and compendium classes I wrote for my Westeros campaign are shared for everyone in the Google Drive link below.

Creating custom classes for my Westeros campaign took more time and energy than all the rest of the setting! I wrote 3 new classes ( #Shaper , #Shadowbinder , and #Warg ), modified the ranger base class to create the #Dragonrider , and fleshed out Sage LaTorra’s #Battlemind  concept to make it into a playable class. I also wrote 3 new compendium classes ( #DarkRider , #Greenseer , and #AzorAhai ).

In the months since, my players and I have enjoyed exploring the northern forests of Westeros together. So far, my players have elected to play both the shaper and  the battlemind, modified by a player to become a singer-specific shaman concept who consumes magical pastes to achieve physical prowess. One has also recently discovered he possesses the power of greensight.

I feel pretty good about how those two base classes and the compendium class have performed during actual play. If you would like details, we keep an ongoing log of our sessions on my wiki here:

The other classes are, I think, in playable form but have not yet been revised with the insight that comes from playtesting. If anyone plays any of these classes and finds them useful, I would really appreciate any questions or feedback on the moves and ideas.

Disclaimer: I think my campaign setting strays pretty far from what G.R.R.M. or his superfans would consider to be canonical, so if that sort of thing bothers you I would advise not reading any of this stuff.
