This week on Dungeon World

This week on Dungeon World

I’m trying to work out how to best play DW as self-contained episodes.

What I’m looking for

– flexibility so game can continue even one or two people (out of five) are missing each session, perhaps even different GMs

– new port every session, creating a montage of action since last session

– start each session knee deep in the action, already committed

– end each session whenever, yet allow success and trouble influence the montage that sets up next session

I’m thinking sort of mission- or job-based session with a varying crew.

Things I’m considering using to prep each session

– Work through Steadings

– Advance Campaign Fronts, with gods and armies and dragons etc.

– New business, inspired by Campaign Fronts but also random like Finding Work from the Planarch Codex

– Unfinished Business, when sessions don’t end neatly; something for influencing the montage and next session set up

– Of course, follow all the GM agenda, principles, move etc.

I’ve got some ideas for how to resolve Unfinished Business, possibly randomly, but I’m wary because I often overcomplicate things like this. I mean, maybe something like an In A Wicked Age Oracles. Or am I missing an obvious simple way to create such an in-between action montage?

Finally got to GM DW with the home group. First session was a blast! Already making plans to play again.

Session outline attached. Most of the high points were used, but the final encounter was totally off the cuff based on the Fiction.

I’m planning on including this page to give GMs an idea on locations in my next adventure supplement.

I’m planning on including this page to give GMs an idea on locations in my next adventure supplement. Since Dungeon World is all about playing to find out what happens, and one of the main principles is to draw maps but leave blanks, I don’t want to go into reams of detail here.

Do you think these factoids and titbits would be enough to go on? Or too much/too little? All feedback welcome. (Appropriate creatures will be included as well. The quote in grey is one of several I’ve scattered throughout, for fluff and as something to give the players for a successful spout lore/carouse etc.)

The weekly Dungeon World game I play in is off the chain. Our wizard is evil, our paladin has been infected with the crazies for a bit and my elven ranger couldn’t make a decent roll to save his life lol. Our fighter on the other hand straight did work with his spear and shield against anything he faced. Epic session. Coming from a mainly Pathfinder and D&D 3.5 guy, this game and system just rocks. I really look forward to this Tuesday night game every week..m/

Hi all

Hi all

Hi all

I have to run a three hour session of DW so I’m trying with this Dungeon Starter

It is the dawn of a decisive battle on the plain

Questions

who fight this battle?

you enlisted?

-if you enlisted

which of you insisted to enlist as mercenaries?

with whom?

what are the rumors about the ruins east of the battlefield?

Who is to blame for the fact that you are losing?

In what regiment are you?

what is the suicide mission for which you volunteered?

Which reward they promised you?

What do you think will happen to the loser army ?

-if you did not enlist

how come you came out from the ruins through a secondary exit?

What were you looking for?

who prevented you from getting it?

which of you triggered the trap that brought down the exit tunnel as you went out?

What do you do now that you are facing a cavalry charge?

Impression

-the armies lined up at dawn, with banners waving

-the tortured bodies after a massacre

-the smell of the blood, carried by the wind, even at the entrance of these ruins

-abominable beings awakened by this smell

-forgotten ancient ruins beneath the vegetation

-ragged vagabonds frightened by fog

-the darkness in the subsoil

-the camp buzzing with activity

-the general who gives orders to the officers, concerned about the trend of battle

-wounded people who complain, devoid of hope

-the rumble of the charging chivalry

-distant sounds in these tunnels otherwise uninhabited

-a race against time, other adventurers in search

-the last bastion of resistance

-crypts of ancient heroes

-the official arrogant and incompetent

-the leader bloodthirsty and ruthless

-prisoners dragged in the mud and / or sacrificed

-havoc in the night in the field

-the dawn of a victory

I will think also some custom move, like

When you are in the heat of the battle…

Critics or suggestions?
