GMs, what is your favourite way of starting off an adventuring group, without the old “you meet in a tavern…” trope?

Have any of you ever worked with alternate Wizard spellbooks?

Have any of you ever worked with alternate Wizard spellbooks? Maybe for a themed game, or for different “schools” of magic. Do they work? Is it something I should try?

I was thinking of ransacking some of the AD&D magic compendiums as well as some Pathfinder books for cool spells and allow the wizard to pick and choose spells. Advisable, or not?

I do not know how many of you know about this, but it’s basically a web app for the DW codex.

I do not know how many of you know about this, but it’s basically a web app for the DW codex. I’ve been struggling to get it working offline on my desktop. Can somebody please help?

I do not know how relevant this is. But I do think it’ll help DW players.

Has anybody created a “character creation” program for DW?

Has anybody created a “character creation” program for DW? One not unlike the DW codex, which asks you questions and you answer them.

I know it’s easy to make DW characters on the fly but I was wondering if anybody had the time to make such a program?

How does one “save” a monster from the Dungeon World Codex? Do you have to do the old printscreen?

I don’t know if this is allowed, but here is my first stab at a DW monster.

Out of interest.

Out of interest. Could you make a plant a monster? Not a carnivorous plant, but merely one that makes people drowsy or irrational. I was thinking about weird amazon rain-forest type flowers (with long pollen generating anthers) and realized, I could represent the sleepy/irrationality effects of a DW type magical flower, with a move. Would this work? Or is a monster a moving, predatory thing?

I have a few questions concerning fronts, gameplay and time.

I have a few questions concerning fronts, gameplay and time.

Firstly, I know what fronts are, I know how to create them and I know how to use them. But my question is; How do they relate to the ongoing game? Does the first session create the campaign front? And, how am I supposed to work with fronts when you need to give the players as much choice as possible?

Secondly, I’ve had trouble making a game go faster. I’m a newb gamemaster and the couple of sessions I’ve played seem to be incredibly slow moving. One session I played involved a single fight with a whole bunch of soldiers in the thrall of a protective mother witch (long story). That single fight lasted 4 hours. How do I speed this up? How do I speed a session up?

If you are reading this and am seeing that I’m missing something important as a gamemaster, please tell me.

I GM’d my second session of Dungeon World today…

And I got it.

It’s so natural, so fluid, I might have overly stressed description a bit (literally a single combat encounter was the adventure) But other than that it was amazing!

At first the PC’s were tentative, not really sure how to roleplay, but after a few nudges and pushes, they started. And it rolled on from there. A Barbarian, Paladin, Cleric, Bard and Fighter. I do not recommend playing with so many characters because (at least in my case) I let 3 or so characters have the spotlight for long periods of time.

I want to thank those that wrote the Dungeon World Guide. Because that was what really allowed me to understand what was going on.

And GM moves? Effortless. Well, at the beginning. But after 4 hours of creative haul your brain begins to fry a bit.

Dungeon World is everything I ever wanted in a Tabletop RPG. Simple, fast, easy to use, and there is no stat clogging (which was what I dislike about d20. You find out midway through the session that there was some stat you forgot to use. Almost inevitable)

Thanks to the Tavern. You guys were a great help.

But most of all, thanks to the creators of Dungeon World.

P.S. How do you, speed up an adventure? I used lots of narrative but it all seemed to drag on a bit.
