I’m wondering how people think about hit points in DW.

I’m wondering how people think about hit points in DW. I realize that “What do hit points represent?” is a very old debate point in RPGs. But DW is its own special case. We all know about the 16 hp dragon.

I’m inclined in my next game to just tell the players that HPs are a measure of how much time you have left–a measure of will to live, or vitality, or even narrative immunity–and not directly tied to physical condition. When you get hit, I don’t see the damage roll and then describe it. I describe a wound appropriate for the situation, and then the dice tell you how much closer to death that puts you.

But maybe people have other ideas, or a different perspective.

Just made this custom move and thought others might enjoy it:

When inventive but probably at least half-crazy gnomes build a prosthetic limb for you, it works pretty much like the original even though it is obviously artificial. By default it has the tags worn and blatant.

(Blatant: it stands out a lot, and people will tend to remember seeing it.)

Choose a look:

• Clockpunk

• Plantlike

• Crystal-and-stone

• Sleek metallic

• Cunningly carved

Choose one benefit:

• Better: it won’t break or suffer damage easily, even where a normal limb would

• Faster: when you can do something with just that one limb, you can act before others

• Stronger: if that limb can do most of the work, take +1 for Defy Danger with STR

• Subtle: remove blatant

And one limitation:

• Noisy: when you use it, it makes noise

• Needs maintenance: every time you Make Camp or stop for the night, you need to do something to maintain it, which also requires some kind of tool or gear. If you don’t, take -1 ongoing until you maintain it

• Breakable: if you put it under high stress, it may break and not work until repaired

• Clumsy: when that limb is primarily involved, take -1 ongoing to DEX

• Painful: it impinges on your body, so when that limb is primarily involved, take -1 ongoing to CON

If anybody’s looking for some play-by-post DW and is an RPGnet user, I’m trying to add some additional good players to an ongoing game. Re-recruitment thread here:

First draft of the player’s guide for Licensed Adventuring Company, a DW campaign/loosely-defined setting that combines heroic adventure with some humor. It includes a full version of my build-your-own-class character creation system, plus many new racial moves.

Eventually I might make a full doc with lots of GM tools and advice, etc. Comments welcome, of course.

(I think) I finally figured out what bugs me about Fronts.

(I think) I finally figured out what bugs me about Fronts.

(I think) I finally figured out what bugs me about Fronts.

I’ve had a long history of struggling with Fronts in this game. I said in my RPGnet review that I wanted that chapter revised one more time, and I’ve played with different ways to try to make it make more sense for me.

But looking at AW again, I think I may have figured out my fundamental problem here. It’s that in this game I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT A ‘FRONT’ IS. Dangers I totally get. I can make dangers all day, and I see their use.

But what’s a Front?

In AW, a Front is an expression of a fundamental scarcity, which is what the game is about. So a particular Front might have mutants and a disease and Tum Tum and a cult in it, but what pulls it together and makes it a Front is that it’s about water and the need for it.

In DW, the Fronts chapter never (that I can find) defines a Front in that kind of way. It’s like they’re just…file folders. There’s no fundamental reason for it to exist or to pull all these dangers together. The example front in the book is kind of a location, kind of an event. And it’s out of context.

So for me, as a big-picture-first kind of person, I think that’s my problem. They say “first choose Adventure Front or Campaign Front” and I say “Campaign, of course” and then they say “Choose 2-3 dangers” and I say “But what is this thing?” and I’ve never gotten an answer to that, at least not one that makes sense enough to stick with me.

I know many people have made new racial moves, for the 4 races in the game and for others.

This is a more complete version of my rules for building your own class a la carte, by picking moves. I have it set up to play like a draft, and I think it will be fun and workable.

But who knows? So anybody who tries it, let me know.

And heck, let’s test it here, if 4 or 5 of you are willing. Let’s just do a draft, make the characters, see if they work, if there are issues or questions. When we’re done building the characters, we can do some leveling up to see what happens too.

Speak up if you want to make a character a new way!
