If I’m going to get Grim World OR The Last Days of Anglekite, but not both, which should I get and most importantly WHY?

  1. My $0.02: Which you should get depends on what you’re looking for. (Full disclosure: I don’t have Grim World; the following is based on the previews they posted, the content others have posted here, and other publicly available stuff.)

From what I’ve seen, Grim World has more portable content. It’s got an implied setting, sorta like DW proper but more defined (and of course, grimmer). But it’s mostly playbooks, class moves, and other “bits” that you can easily use in any given DW game.

Angelkite is pretty much a setting book. It’s a pretty cool setting, and it’s really well done, but it’s a lot less portable. You probably only want if either 1) you think you’d like to run a game in that setting, or 2) you want to pilfer campaign/setting ideas wholesale. (or 3, you just want to support interesting work for its own sake).

If you’re looking for a setting, I’d go with Angelkite. If you’re looking for more portable content, I’d say Grim World.

  2. I haven’t read Grim World, but Anglekite is a great book. It’s definitely possible to use ideas, monsters and items from it in other settings (I’ve done it in a couple of games), but it has a very strong weird fantasy vibe, so if you’re not into that it will be of less use than Grim World might be.

  3. I’ve got both. If you are searching for a “Sword & Sorcery” mood, AND for lot of new playbooks, go for Grim World.

Angelkite is nice as “pre-made” campaign, BUT I think they were not too much accustomed with the PbtA engine, ’cause they created some aspect in a too-mechanical way (this is my feelings, however it’s long time I read the book, so I can’t give you exact examples about that).

  4. I dont have angelkite, but grim world is definetly the best DW addon I came across so far. Highly recommended.

Edit: oh and for the why: amazing new classes and compendium classes, epic dying moves, interesting adventure fronts and so on. Very well rounded.
