Tonight is the second session of my groups new Dungeon World campaign.

Tonight is the second session of my groups new Dungeon World campaign. We have done a one shot, but this is the first time that we have sat down with the intention of running a long term game. I am absolutely loving it as a GM. I really enjoy how the game and the world are collaboratively built. During our first session, I asked the group what the ruin they were exploring were and what they were looking for, and it turns out they are searching the keep of the Witch-Queen in search of either the Giant’s Horde, or the Giant’s Heart (the map is smudged). This led me to create this item for tonight’s game:

The Giant’s Heart

This chunk of rough redish,-purplish quartz is about the size of a halflings head (or an ogres fist) and seems to slowly pulse when handled.  When you whisper your hearts desire to the stone and ask it how you may obtain it roll +int. On a 10+ the stone will deliver a vague vision on one way to obtain your desire. Hold 2. When the character later acts on this vision, they make take +1 forward. On a 7-9, the vision comes too suddenly, and is jarring and confusing.  Hold 1. You are confused until you can get a good nights rest. On 6 or less, the being inside the heart demands more than just knowing your hearts desire.

Ring of Shadows

A thin ring of smooth iron clasping a shard of onyx.  If you look at the onyx closely enough, its blackness seems to shift just below the surface.

When you evade or avoid a watchful eye, take +1.

Hey wizards and scholars, want to help me crowdsource a bunch of cool magic items? Say yes and I will give you a name and description, and then rely on you to tell me everything I need to make it a fun Dungeon World relic – game effects, brief backstory, whatever strikes you. I’d prefer fairly low-powered (or no powered!) stuff but if your item is simply too awesome, that’s OK, too.

Comment below with “send me one!” and I’ll assign you a magic item.

Silver Gauntlet

There was an old dwarfen hero. A Thief really. He decided to woe a dwarfen girl and as it was tradition the dwarf that brought the biggest treasure would win her heart. Together with his human friend he went out and had many adventures. So rich was he, that he created a whole magical armor of gleaming silver to prepare for robbing the hoard of the biggest and strongest of the elemental dragons. This Gauntlet here looks a lot like this design.

The wearer of this Gauntlet can open any lock with ease and the simplest of tools. Just get the Gauntlet in proximity to it and it will go to work. However, it has a mind of it’s own and shouldn’t be close to valuables. It will reach for them and palm or pocket them without it’s wearer knowing about it. When the Guards catch them later, they will loose the Gauntlet AND the hand.

What happened to dwarfen thief you ask? Well, that is another story.

The Sound rod

This metal rod is maybe as long as your hand and made from a silvery material. When you push its one and only button the light at the top starts to glow and the rod emits a buzzing noise. Depending on the model the light might be blue or green. Just point the rod at the thing you want to manipulate, think what it should do and press the button. After having scanned an energy source or magical effect you can read out it’s potence and strengh by extending the rod.

For unknown purposes the rod might not work on wood and can only be used an arbitrary number of times.

At the beginning of the session, roll+INT

On a 10+ hold 3, on a 7-9 hold 2.

You can spend your hold 1 for 1 to make the rod do something. Reading energy outputs does not require an expenditure of hold.

The Whispering Cloak

A paranoid Lordqueen of the Golden Plains wished to know everything that happened, be it in her kingdom or her court. She payed 5 astromagicians their weight in gold and diamonds to create this cloak for her. While she was wearing this deep blue cape and hood with the embedded silver stars she could hear every whisper as loud as if it was spoken with clear voice. When she was alone with someone she could even hear what the people thought.

Of course it drove her insane after years of use.

Vampirc Dagger.  When you Attempt to steal someones essence, Roll+Con On a 10+ choose 2 on a 7-9 Choose 1  On a miss it backfires.

You Steal their essence roll d6 they take that Damage and you heal that much.

You gain their memories and can Spout Lore about things they know.

Vampirc Dagger.  When you Attempt to steal someone’s Soul, Roll+Con on a 10 + gain 3 hold on a 7-9 gain 1 hold on a 6-  The dagger is angry and punishes you, GM tells you what happens.

For 1 hold You Steal their Essence roll d6 they take Dmg and you heal that much.

For 1 hold You gain their memories and can attempt to Spout Lore about things they might know.

I would like advice on at least one more option , and especially what happends on a fail.  I don’t want it to just be dmg.  This is my first attempt at a custom item and help is much appreciated. Thanks for any input.

I’m totally new to the fantasy genre, so forgive me: how do you describe significant magical artifacts when the players discover them? Do you trigger Spout Lore to see if they know what it does, or just let them read it outright? Spilling an item’s secrets at the outset (especially those with campaign-level significance) seems like it’d take us out of the fiction.

Spear of the Shadow Hunter

Spear of the Shadow Hunter

Spear of the Shadow Hunter

Reach, thrown, near, 1 piercing, +1 damage, 1 weight

The Spear of the Shadow Hunter is a beautifully crafted, and entirely black, spear. It’s haft is made of some sort of pure black wood, that is both sturdy and light to the touch. Affixed to the end with a wrapping of black metallic wire is an obsidian spearhead that never chips of dulls. At first, the spear seems to be nothing more than an exceptionally crafted weapon. But once the spear draws blood, the spear will be bonded to that quarry until it is killed. When the bearer of the Spear of the Shadow Hunter stalks the quarry alone, he will be able to track the quarry directly to its location. The spear becomes enveloped in tendrils of shadow, obfuscating and hiding the hunter, and guiding him to his prey. But once on the hunt, the hunter cannot relent even for a moment, nor can he call other hunters to his aid, lest the spirits of the great hunters within the spear judge him unworthy.

Orb of Ostrychian Arcana

0+ weight

Discovered amongst the ruined pyramids of their once-great empire, the Orb is a typical Ostrychian artifact – its power comes with a heavy cost. When the Orb is near a spellbook or scroll, it will be drawn to it as if by powerful magnetism. Once in direct contact with the item it will absorb the entirety of its contents and burn right through the original, consuming it completely. The Orb starts as a marble-sized sphere of impossibly reflective silver. With each spell that it absorbs it grows in diameter by about 1mm.

Evidence gleaned from tablets found at various Ostrychian sites suggest that the orb once grew to the size of a city. No mention has been found of how this situation was resolved; but popular theory surmises that the Orb released all of its arcane energies in a single cataclysmic blast, putting an abrupt end to the empire.

When you spend uninterrupted time (an hour or so) in quiet contemplation of the Orb, you can hold up to a total of +X, where X equals your spellcasting level.

When casting a spell while holding the Orb, you cast any spell of your spellcasting level or lower that has been absorbed by the Orb. Spend 1 hold and roll+INT, • On a 10+, the spell is successfully cast, • on a 7-9, the spell is cast, but the GM will tell you one:

• Use of the Orb draws unwelcome attention.

• The Orb requires some form of compensation for its service.

• You grow more dependent on the Orb’s power.

It’s weight starts at 0, but will increase proportionately with it’s size; a grapefruit-sized Orb will have 1 weight.
