I’m planning on making a play by post community on Google+ focused on short loosely connected campaigns. I think I’ll use the Mark Tygart one shots for inspiration. We’ll likely use the standard DW rules as is.

Comment if interested or have questions and I’ll keep you posted.

Another entry to my ongoing Dungeon World Sci-Fi game and resources: Black Skies, Bright Stars is a sci-fi reskin of Jeremy Strandberg’s Dungeon Starter Sailing the Sapphire Islands. Check it out if you feel like taking a trip on a spaceship into a galaxy far far away.

Comments are open in the doc. If you have any feedback or suggestions for ways to make it more awesome let me know!

$6 gets you: DW Core + Great Monsters of Crime + 20 Dungeon Starters + Perilous Wilds + Grim Hunt

~$20 gets you: a ridiculous amount more.

10% goes to Doctors Without Borders.

An insanely good deal. I’ve got well over half this stuff and I’m still thinking about it, mostly for Liam Ginty’s The Boughs and some misc Johnstone Metzger’s stuff that I missed.

Tell your friends.

THE PORTAL UNDER THE STARS A Level 0-1 DCC RPG Adventure Dungeon World Conversion Notes

(Module by Joseph Goodman, Dungeon World Conversion Notes by Mark Tygart)

Ssisssuraaaaggg, Demon Naga

Solitary, Large, Planar

Bite (d10 damage)

12 HP, 2 armor

Near

Special Qualities: Tempts Mortals

When Ssisssuraaaaggg is killed, its snake body dissolves into ash, leaving only the naga’s demonic horn behind. The horn can be used to commune with the demon when meditated upon. It will offer its services in combat in exchange for information, magic items or evil acts. It is often employed as a treasure guardian. (Monster adapted from the classic DCC Adventure “The Portal under the Stars” by Joseph Goodman)

Instinct: Offer Deal or Bargain

Seek lost magic, knowledge and artifacts

Send a follower to their death

Guard for an employer

Crystal Victim Statue

Group, Devious, Construct

Hands (1d4 damage)

6 HP, 0 armor

Close

Special Qualities: Transformed ancient prisoners, Pacifist, Arcane construct

Their features are hard to discern because of their translucency, but they are perfect replicas of the eons-old proto-human warrior prisoners who were transformed to create them. They are attracted to light and shuffle toward torches and lanterns. They do not attack, but their approach may seem menacing, and they will defend themselves. If they reach a torch or other light source unmolested, they simply stand next to it and absorb the warmth. (Monster adapted from the classic DCC Adventure “The Portal under the Stars” by Joseph Goodman)

Instinct: Defend

Attracted by Light

Seek Warmth

Will not attack, only defend

Living Bones

Solitary, Large, Construct

Skull Bite (d4 damage)

6 HP, 0 armor

Special Qualities: Undead

The bones are living dead that have decayed over the eons. They shake and rattle as characters approach; however, they can no longer animate into cohesive skeletons. The skulls clack, clatter, and attempt to bite, but are easily avoided and crushed through normal means.(Monster adapted from the classic DCC Adventure “The Portal under the Stars” by Joseph Goodman)

Instinct: Destroy

Fail to form skeletons

Shake

Rattle

Clay Army Soldier

Horde, Construct

Spear (d4 damage)

3 HP, 0 Armor

Close, Near

Special Qualities: Arcane Construct, Water will Destroy, Requires Clay Warlord

“A great stillness pervades the room. It is the stillness of death; the silence of a tomb. Then, suddenly, the stillness is broken as the clay warlord jerkily raises an arm toward his generals. Then, the entire army takes a lurching step forward, shattering the silence with the tramp of doom.” If the warlord is killed (same stats), the entire army loses anima, becoming simply a set of clay statues. (Monster adapted from the classic DCC Adventure “The Portal under the Stars” by Joseph Goodman)

Instinct: Obey the Clay Warlord and his Generals!

Traps:

Searing Light Trap: (1d8d) Roll Defy Danger +DEX, 10+: No damage, 7-9: ½ Damage.

Statute Spear Attack: (1d8d) Roll Defy Danger +DEX, 10+: No damage, 7-9: ½ Damage. Four spear attacks: +2 to hit (additional +2 to hit if characters stand in doorway bull’s-eye).

Five Flame Spurt Attacks: 1d10d Fire Damage Roll Defy Danger +DEX, 10+: No damage, 7-9: ½ Damage.

All GP becomes coins.

The Crystal Ball is a Far Sight Stone (As per the Dungeon World Rule Book).

So, after yet another session about to be cancelled because of last-minute real life emergencies, I’ve decided to make Freebooters on the Frontier my go-to pick-up game. We did a twist on it by adding Number Appearing to the mix so all PCs for now are of “monstrous” stock, and burying silver in a safe spot is like banking money.

Second session in, and we find it a lot of fun. The high mortality makes it a great framework for a light pick-up game, and the idea of a persistent, evolving, undiscovered wilderness with teams forming spontaneously depending on who’s at the table really resonated with my players.

So now I’m carrying my notes and character sheets to every session I attend, whether player or GM, in case it gets last-minute cancelled. So far it’s a refreshing change of pace compared to long-winded serious campaigns 🙂 If it goes on long enough, I’ll share more details (and a proper map if it comes to that) as well as some of the better monsters coming from the Perilous Wilds tables.

I’m about to introduce some RPG newbies to gaming with Dungeon World. Some of them don’t know a lot about standard fantasy tropes. Does anyone have advice for how to stop the setting development via Q&As from degenerating into Monty Python/gonzo silliness?

Pacing The Labyrinth move

Pacing The Labyrinth move

How much does the amount of hold to reach the end affect pacing and time?

My players are headed into the volcanic dwarven stronghold of Ang Khazem, in pursuit of the mad linguist-sorcerer Galdur. We decided collectively to use Jason Cordova ‘s Labyrinth move for this. How many hold is a good number to pace this out to maybe two sessions? Our sessions run maybe three hours, and we seldom have more than three scenes per session. They also want to find some dwarven warmachines and the fabled necklace Brisingamen, so they’ll probably spend some hold on that.
