“Hunt for the Daedalus” is a Sci-Fi Adventure for Dungeon World inspired by Timothy Zahn’s novel “The Icarus Hunt”. It’s a collection of fronts, custom moves, and cherry-picked adaptations of some of my favourite DW content. As a whole, it is set up to be a fast paced, high stakes chase across the stars: where the PC’s race against a ticking clock and overwhelming odds trying to evade capture on their way back to earth with a mysterious and valuable cargo.

If you’re interested in providing some feedback here is a list of specific things I’m hoping to get your advice on:

– In general, how clear is it? I’m trying to leave it open-ended but I also want to make sure I leave enough info so that GM’s will understand how to run the chase. Tips here on things to add, change, or clarify would be appreciated.

– Collaborative sector creation: this follows very closely to Jason Lutes mapping section in “The Perilous Wilds”. Credit is given at the end and I’ve made some effort to differentiate it from his work. However, I’m somewhat concerned that the resemblance between his excellent paid content and my free re-skinning is too close. Any suggestions for areas I could tweak, simplify, or expand to better suit my module and a sci-fi campaign in general?

– Special Moves: Thoughts? Advice on tweaks and clarifications? Also, the “Heat” move is an important aspect of the scenario but the mechanics are taken almost directly from the excellent “Scum and Villainy” which is not a creative commons work. Any suggestions on an alternate mechanic I could replace it with or tweaks/edits to make it more my own?

– Lastly, the latter quarter of the module is still unfinished. Any suggestions for things to include? Space monsters? Cool tables? Discoveries? Etc?

Any other feedback, ideas, questions, and comments greatly appreciated.

Thanks, everybody, I hope you enjoy checking out the adventure!

Quick story from my game last night where a planning mishap led to a very cool outcome with food for thought for future sessions.

The party is making their way through a slot canyon. They’ve sent the fighter ahead to scout. He notices strange slime on the walls and bits of debris seemingly floating in mid-air. It’s a Chaos Ooze. The bard/channeler blasts it with his thunder voice. He opens a hole big enough to run through but the Ooze is rapidly reconstituting itself. Party sprints through the hole blown in the Ooze and most of them roll success with cost.

This is where the mishap comes in. I think, ok, they’ll get caught by the dripping ooze, take some damage, but make it to the other side. Except, the problem is when copying the monster’s stat block onto my cheat sheet I forgot to include the damage dice. On the fly, I look to the monster moves, see “Cause a change in appearance or substance” and decide that each of them gets a portion of their body or gear transmogrified into a new material. Through their own ideas, they all end up sporting permanent metallic scars including the ranger who’s face is now half metal. It was awesome and they loved it.

TLDR: Forgot to include damage stat for the monster and had to think of creative ways for the monster to affect my PC’s. It was way better than rolling D10 and ticking off a few hitpoints.

Takeaway: I think I’m going to “forget” what a creature’s damage die is much more often in the future.

Anyone ever have a mishap like this turn into something cool at the table?

I’m very excited to announce that my Dungeon World adventure, “The Ruined Tower of Drazhu” is back and better than ever! Like it’s namesake, the evil Lich Drazhu, it has taken on a newer and more awesome form.

I’ve refined the hooks, added more magic items, and packaged the whole thing in a print ready, art-filled bundle. It’s free now on drivethrurpg. Check it out and, if you like it, I’d love if you left me a rating, review, or comment.

Happy adventure’s everybody!

Oren-Esah Matter Cloak — worn, 1 weight

A midnight blue cloak, woven through with pulsing amber threads. The fabric contains a sampling of the legendary matter manipulating technology of the long-extinct Oren-Esah.

When you allow the amber threads to weave themselves into your flesh, roll+CON. ✴ On a 10+, you can reform inert matter in your vicinity into a simple shape or structure of your choosing ✴ On a 7-9, as above but choose one option from the list below:

– The structure is unstable and will collapse momentarily.

– It takes a great force of will to maintain the shape. You may only hold the matter in its current configuration for as long as you are able to maintain full concentration.

– The power of the cloak is drained. It will take at least a day before you will be able to make use of it again.

There are a lot of great creators in The Tavern that have made some awesome adventures.

There are a lot of great creators in The Tavern that have made some awesome adventures. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices. So, for those of you that create adventures and the rest of us that play them, I’d love to hear some of your top picks and why you like running them in DW.

This post is inspired specifically by Mark Tygart. I’ve used several of your starters and am always amazed by the rate at which you create your adventures. Scrolling through your shared folder recently I wonder, out of all the adventures you’ve created, what are your favourites? Also, outside of your own adventures, do you have a favourite by someone else that you like to run?

Another resource for Sci-Fi Dungeon World.

Another resource for Sci-Fi Dungeon World.

I love and have found quite useful the lazy DM cheat sheet from slyflourish.com so I spent the weekend crafting A sci-fi, slightly modified version for my Dungeon World game.

The concept is to create an improv swiss army knife. A one-stop, one-page resource containing super quick NPC and faction generators, adventure hooks, locations, dangers, monsters, loot, and powerful artifacts.

Check it out and let me know what you think. All feedback appreciated.

Also, if you’re feeling creative, I’d love to add some community suggestions in the lists. Loot, artifacts, locations, more popular sci-fi content for the “movie-inspired adventures” section; whatever tickles your sci-fi fancy. Thanks, everybody!

Along with my ongoing Curse of Drazhu campaign, I’ve been experimenting with an open table, sci-fi dungeon world game. The goal is to do a linked series of self-contained adventures. To facilitate that I made a sci-fi version of John Lewis’ Adventure Builder from RPG Alchemy. I’ve attached it below. Take a look and let me know what you think. I’m especially open if anyone has any great ideas of prompts to add or replace. Thanks!

Taking the feedback I got from you all, I’ve created my first draft of my custom move: “The Lich’s Curse”.

Taking the feedback I got from you all, I’ve created my first draft of my custom move: “The Lich’s Curse”.

It’s a combination various suggestions melded into something I think will be pretty cool. However, it’s the first draft and first drafts can always be better. Check it out and leave a comment to let me know what you think!

Also, if you’d like to adapt it for your own games please do, it would be easy to replace the Drazhu specifics with some more general “curse” terminology. I’d love to see other versions.
