I owe my druid a magic item from a session where they rescued a ton of civilians from imprisonment by evil fishfolk. After clearing the first room and it was clear that they could fight the number of kuo-toa that were stationed at each section without fully dying, we came up with a custom move so as not to play through the fight over and over.
One of the choices granted by the custom move was to get a cool treasure, and over the course of several poor rolls our druid picked up a few debilities in order to grab the treasure and rescue the prisoners, so I want it to be something cool. His character has been keen on finding new animal shapes to turn into, so I wanted something related to that. Here’s what I came up with, any thoughts?
One of the prisoners that you saved offers you a trinket in appreciation. It’s a small carving of an animal that seems to take the form of an animal native to the environment that you are in. A trained shapechanger can attune to it when morphing into a new form.
When you first inspect the trinket after breaking camp in a new location, roll +Wis.
On a 10+, choose the animal the totem represents.
On a 7-9 the GM chooses a useful animal for you.
On a 6- the GM chooses for you.
Hey, first time posting. Hi everyone!
Hey, first time posting. Hi everyone!
I had a question: Has anyone ever tried to incorporate pre-created puzzles or traps into a game? I have an idea for a “Tomb of Horrors” inspired lich’s lair.
A Couple of Examples:
Deck of Cards Puzzle
The characters come upon a magically sealed portal. There’s a card deck on the table. The wall has this inscription:
Like a book of many pages or a tree of many leaves
This loom of fate with many strings; what fabric that it weaves!
To draw upon your destiny’s a game of random chance,
But what you draw will be a key if you wish to advance.
The characters can either draw from the deck (basically a Deck of Many Things) risking all sorts of horrors until they draw the “Key” card, or they can just pull out a piece of chalk and draw a key somewhere on the door…or wall…or anywhere, I’m not picky.
Coffin Puzzle
The characters kill the lich in his tomb. But there’s still the phylactery! Fortunately, when the defeated lich crumbles to dust, it leaves behind a scroll with this:
You think you’ve defeated me! You think you’ve saved the day!
You fools! I’ll just return and start again to your dismay!
That is, unless, you mimic me and lie down with dead friends,
Discover my true weakness, or you’ll meet your tragic end!
The idea is the characters need to lie down in the lich’s coffin and close the lid. Then they get teleported to the room where the phylactery is located. Probably a mimic too, since that word was in the rhyme.
I feel like these might buck against the improvisational spirit of the game, and might slow down play if the players don’t come up with a solution. But sometimes it feels like the crazy lich would leave a bunch of rhyming clues to tempt foolish mortals to their doom. Is this just a bad fit for Dungeon World, or has anyone had success doing something this?
Any advice or opinions? Or should I just save this sort of thing for a D&D game?
As requested, here is the second example situation analysed through the lens of #FantasyWorld’s mechanics.

Let me know in the poll and comments if you find this an interesting comparison, or if I should spend my time otherwise 😉

Hi everyone, I’ve launched a short DW campaign in which one of the players plays a gunslinger (Peter J version).
Hi everyone, I’ve launched a short DW campaign in which one of the players plays a gunslinger (Peter J version).
One of his bonds is “I once had Elsa (a female burglar) in my sights, but I let her live” and we don’t really know how to solve it. How could this change? Or stop being true? (apart from killing her…)
He’s also secretly in love with her, in the first session he tried to save her as she was dangling from a rope above a chasm but rolled a 6- and got knocked out (great scene 🙂 ).
Could anyone suggest a way to solve this bond? Thanks a lot!

Amazing how adding a single good prep question can really help an adventure!
Amazing how adding a single good prep question can really help an adventure! This is minor something that I actually made up at the table in play to start (based on a map in Le Guin’s Earthsea book Tombs of Atuan) but I keep coming back to refine…players seem to like it.

so does anyone do anything special when the players roll doubles.
so does anyone do anything special when the players roll doubles. I feel like there is an opportunity there to do something, just not sure what it would be? I like the lightness of DW, so I don’t want it to be overly complicated, but when I see double’s it just says now that’s 10 the hard way or even 8 the hard way. Snake eyes and box cars should be something, with the rarity, and those are the easy ones (super shucks moment maybe double XP, and super awesome). Its the double 2, 3,4,5 that trouble and beguile me.
Peace,
I need opinions on an alternative magic system for the Wizard in #FantasyWorld. Could you help me out? 🙂
