I owe my druid a magic item from a session where they rescued a ton of civilians from imprisonment by evil fishfolk. After clearing the first room and it was clear that they could fight the number of kuo-toa that were stationed at each section without fully dying, we came up with a custom move so as not to play through the fight over and over.

One of the choices granted by the custom move was to get a cool treasure, and over the course of several poor rolls our druid picked up a few debilities in order to grab the treasure and rescue the prisoners, so I want it to be something cool. His character has been keen on finding new animal shapes to turn into, so I wanted something related to that. Here’s what I came up with, any thoughts?

One of the prisoners that you saved offers you a trinket in appreciation. It’s a small carving of an animal that seems to take the form of an animal native to the environment that you are in. A trained shapechanger can attune to it when morphing into a new form.

When you first inspect the trinket after breaking camp in a new location, roll +Wis.

On a 10+, choose the animal the totem represents.

On a 7-9 the GM chooses a useful animal for you.

On a 6- the GM chooses for you.

  1. The Druid already has “Studied Essence” as a starting move, which says

    Studied Essence

When you spend time in contemplation of an animal spirit, you may add its species to those you can assume using shapeshifting.

How easily The Druid can use that move to add new forms to their repertoire depends on what your table decides “contemplation of an animal spirit” means.

If they can contemplate an animal spirit by just finding a normal wild animal and watching it for a bit, then the item seems a bit redundant… it might be useful if they chose an animal they’re not likely to meet (but somehow know of anyway), but otherwise, they have an easy way to permanently gain new forms in their current environment.

If they have to go on some sort of spirit quest by consuming mind-altering fungi and searching the dream world for an animal spirit, or they have to entice an animal spirit to them through elaborate Druidic rites, or something similarly demanding, then the item becomes more useful and cool.
