Planar Codex is so awesome. Last night my party found themselves in the newly devoured Parish of Detroit in the 1970’s battling biker gangs and riding in a 1970 Dodge Charger next to the local heroes Mitch Groove and Donny Champion. After a massive bar brawl where they killed the leader of the villainous biker gang and saved Donny’s girl friend, Honey Bee, then rode off into the sunset in their 1970s yellow van. Totally awesome.!

Here’s an NPC/monster I used during a Planarch Codex session today. It made for a great scene during play, so I thought I’d share.

Ghost of a nameless Planar Poet

Solitary, Intelligent, Planar

Cutting Voice (10 damage) 12 HP 0 Armor

Special Quality: Flaming Eyes

“It almost looks like a human, almost, except for the flaming eyes. Wait, I think it’s talking… Oh my… ugh… it’s a seemingly neverending lay about the mistreatment and injustices experienced during a poetic life… no, we can’t leave now, we can’t possibly… no, not another line of regular iambic pentameter, please, no… PLEAHEAHEASE… NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.”

Instinct: Gather an audience

– Enthrall their minds and make them listen

– Make them feel utterly lost and desperately lonely with poetry

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: This week is your last chance to get Dark Heart of the Dreamer in print (for $10 w/ free shipping anywhere in the world), at least for the forseeable future. If you’ve been holding out, hold out no longer! I will still bring a few copies to local cons and meetups, but that’s pretty much it.

LIKEWISE: If you’ve purchased a copy a while ago and have not yet recieved it, please let me know! I’m down to the last few dozen copies and want to make sure everyone is taken care of. The Postal Service is great, but there have been a few disappearing copies. If you might have been a victim of such a mishap, let me know and I’ll make things right!

Hey Jon

Hey Jon

Hey Jon,

Any chance of someone writing up the most excellent ‘Posse Creation’ bonds into the Planarch Codex style PDF handout? Or add them somewhere to the character sheets? I love this part of play and always add it to the one-shot WoD Intro spiel. Instant factions and all that.

Love your work mate 🙂

So, a few months ago someone on Story Games linked to this course on Coursera, ‘Designing Cities’. I can’t find the post, so I don’t know who it was, but if it was you thanks so much – it’s been amazing.

The course has been interesting throughout, but the last set of lectures this week have been pure Planarch Codex gold. It’s been about visionary cities, cities that have been designed but never built. It’s been a brilliant melange of craziness: walking cities, floating lily pad cities that migrate from place to place, pods clustered onto the outside of towers, cities that underlie existing cities and subvert the intentions of their designers, cities that express political ideals.

You should still be able to sign up and get access to the videos – highly recommended. As I say, it’s all good, but the Visionary Cities stuff in week 9 is highly game-able.

I also just updated our links to include character sheets for both DW and World of Dungeons, the one-shot guide, and the experimental Calvino Cycle campaign. If you view the community page on G+, you should see them.

Some folks asked about heritage moves recently, so I wanted to link to the semi-official Guide to Running Planarch One-Shots that I posted (somewhere?) a while back. While it specifically focuses on running convention games and other one-shots (sharing the Planarch love with others), it does include the list of heritage moves I bring along for demos and some other suggestions that are useful for longer-running Planarch games. Hope you all find it useful!

So… there’s a new Planarch Codex supplement, and I just finished the first draft. It’s pretty weird! But I hope people dig it. Definitely still needs to be played and edited, and will probably always be a free thing. I have some thoughts on future changes too, but this is good enough for now.

Now back to the other projects demanding my immediate attention!

Special shout-out to: Claudia Cangini Paolo Bosi Nikitas Thlimmenos and Ben Wray for being responsible for this madness.
