Thinking about my submission to the DW zine project.

Thinking about my submission to the DW zine project. I’m thinking it’ll be another plane-hopping adventure, just because I’m in that mode right now. Here’s what I’m currently thinking, though the final version will also have maps and dangers, I think:

Icy Fiscal Cliffs (working title)

The frozen star Ephedra has plummeted into the elemental plane of water, freezing it completely solid in the course of a fortnight. At some future time, unknowable except by diviners and soothsayers (and who can trust those scoundrels?), the ice will crack, the thaw will come, and the living seas will writhe once again. For now, however, the plane hangs suspended, an immense crystalline fortress of towering spires and icy caverns.

That would be enough, in an of itself, to temp fortune-seekers out onto the ice to hunt for wealth and lost artifacts previously thought to be sunk forever beneath the endless roaring waves. But then the renowned archaeologist Alexa Van Der Vaart (Associate Professor of Anthropoid Civilizations at the Academia Arcadia, raider of the tomb of Abaddon) spotted dark blotches that “are unquestionably the hulks of the Arcadian Treasure Fleet,” frozen a few leagues below the surface, their holds near to bursting with valuables (and people) fleeing the expansion of the city of Dis several hundred years ago.

The rush is on. Despite Alexa’s attempts to claim the site as a historical find of great significance to the Arcadian diaspora, multiple mining operations currently are competing to be the first to drill down to the ships and adventuring parties are searching through the icy caverns for an unimpaired route. Of course, with all this activity and ice-breaking in the area surrounding the dark blotches, the thaw may come sooner (at least to this portion of the ice) than anyone currently suspects. Even worse, Alexa has voiced her worries privately to you that the dark spots she assumed to the fleet appear to be moving in recent days. That can’t be right, can it?

Your Mission: Ensure that Alexa and her husband Patrice Garçon get to the treasure fleet before anyone else despoils the site. Alexa is, of course, a capable adventurer in her own right, but she has no illusions about the friendliness of the mining companies and spelunking parties who are also after the treasure and what might need to be done in order to “secure her rights” to the wrecks. She wouldn’t normally have hired you, but the members of her usual crew were either killed or maimed in the expedition to Abaddon’s tomb. Most other local miscreants of any skill are already out on the ice. Patrice knows at least one of you from a previous job you did for the Academia Arcadia, where he is a Visiting Lecturer in Trap Construction (roll or choose what this job was). Your cut is 1/3 of whatever the find is worth and the clock is ticking. Better get going then, eh?

I’m working on converting my World of Ro setting to something akin to Dungeon World, and I am wondering–how do you deal with races that have bonuses that are always available no matter what class they take?  Like say a race that can glide due to their wings.  No matter what class they take, all of them can glide.  How do I model this?  Thanks.  =)

So here’s my question for the evening: do you all think the game would run OK with just the DM and a PC, or is 2 players the safe minimum?

My fiance and I have a 12 hour drive and DMing some DW would keep me sharp for the drive.

So, I thought to myself, “Hmmm, I wonder what Planescape’s Outer Planes would look like as parishes of Dis?” And…

Hey folks

Hey folks

Hey folks,

Two things: the first is just a reminder that there’s now one more week for your submissions to come in for the DW zine I’m working on. If you can’t make the deadline but you’re keen to contribute, get in touch with me and I’ll see if we can work something out.

The other thing is: do you have any suggestions for the name of the zine? So far I’ve thought up:

World Magazine (riffing on Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine, but pretty vague!)

The Front (my current favourite)

Dungeon World Zine (straight and to the point)

This is a little gem I found on a blog called GM Struggles.

This is a little gem I found on a blog called GM Struggles. Nifelhein, the blog owner, reposts a response he gave in the DW once. The original forum post was the one that originally made me “get” the DW framework and mindset. Enjoy 🙂

First of all – THANK YOU, guys, for backing and making this FUN TRPG!

First of all – THANK YOU, guys, for backing and making this FUN TRPG! I was searching for the whole 2012 for The Game, both to introduce new people to RPGs and to have no headache about GMing and preps. I live in Russia, and there’s a really small community of actual players and GMs, so I decided that it’ll be much easier to “convert” my real mates into a dungeon crawlin’ squad:)

So, I missed your Kickstarter but I’ve bought a PDF and was actually shocked, cause you’ve nailed it! I’ve been playing different stuff since 97 maybe, and every year since then fantasy games became more and more hardcore and tactics/builds/balance oriented, and lot of good PC games and new consoles added some casual feel to gaming itself, in any form, so hardcore went deeper underground. After all, MMORPG took all my friends interested in tabletop playing and there were no FUN things on a tabletop market. Easy and fun. And finally – a solution! Fast and really clear system, comfortable level of maths and rules and many features to choose from, free flow of both narrative and crunch, and the most important – the feel reminds me of my favorite campaigns in the past:) So THANK YOU one more time. It was a really big quest to find your game.

Though, I have a couple of questions/ideas:

1. How can any DW progress beyond +3/-3 modifiers with 2d6 roll? Cause -3 it’s ok, but with +4 you’ve never get fail, so… I have an idea, but I’m not sure that it’ll suite quite well. And if there is any reason to do that at all?

2. I really appreciate the fact, that we can freely add moves and classes and so on, but I hope that this book is just the beginning of your game development, right? Are you going to release any supplements in Q1/2013?

3. Defy Danger is an absolutely beautiful solution for any kind of… em.. dangers:) But as I understood, all the character’s interactions within the game world in a “positive way” are provided through their class moves or special moves. In theory, for making some potions/weapons etc. or dealing with anyone or other stuff like “not-killing-not-evading” there are lots of specialized moves. What if simplify some of them to Try It or Overcome and make it also depending on  basic attributes? Roll + str for all the bullying/breaking stuff, roll + dex for all the cunning/speedy stuff and so on. Cause sometimes there is no fighter in the party, but there are some situations when you need to bend some bars. Literally 😀 And it could help newbies to start improvising…

Sorry for such a big post, but I’m just too excited about DW and that’s it:)
