My group made plans to kick off Dungeon World this Monday evening. I’ve been reading my copy of the book, and I’m reviewing my GM principles. I’m percolating some fantastical imagery, and thinking about cool things and listening to good music. So excited!

Excalibur – Merlin’s Magic Spell

Today I had the pleasure of running an opening session of Dungeon World for three of my teens. We ended up with a thief, a druid, and a wizard.

I must say, Dungeon World exceeded my expectations. I’ve played Monsterhearts and had been anxious to try DW. The kids, who’d had some experience with D&D before, all remarked that they liked it more.

The thief player said he enjoyed creating a world together, and he came up with some great stuff. He lives in a barn unbeknownst to the farmer who owns it. He steals his breakfast every morning and spends his days training in secret in the cornfield or helping Farmer Dodge. He took the name of the farm after his mom was killed in a battle ten years ago. Detail after detail poured out of him. I’m very proud of him.

The druid enjoyed it a lot too. He chose the druid and spent a lot of time shapeshifting, making inventive use of the ability. He became a bear, a wolf,  an owl, and a scorpion. He had the wizard fling him at an onrushing bandit. Pure awesome sauce.

The wizard sat at the table, interested in what we were doing. She decided to join us and had a great time. She spent a lot of time going invisible and speaking telepathically with the thief who was scouting ahead. She asked if we’d be paying again soon, so I think I’ve got a convert. I think she’d like to know who’s whispering in her head things like “I see you” when she’s invisible and “I would run if I were you!”

I had a lot of fun too. I did have some trouble GM’ing moves that involved things like hard bargains. I did get the hang of it over time, though.

The wizard player thought the map was cool. Pictured is the wet-erase battle-mat I bought years ago, and I’d never used it before. The ability to draw maps on it helped get everyone focused on the game. I drew a broad map of the region as the players came up with details, and some tactical maps as well during our orc and bandit battles. I think miniatures are in order if this becomes a regular thing.

Played in my first session of Dungeon World today. I am playing Gorm the Gluttonous, warrior from the sandy South who woke up on a ship bound for the north thanks to a vengeful woman and a head-full of wine. Now he finds himself among strange barbarians and their mysterious, prophesied Mountain That Once Moved.

(In truth, Gorm is a Barbarian, but I find it funny to play a Barbarian who thinks he’s the only civilized person around. He has already introduced the party to coffee.)

Gorm is fairly certain that the deepest dungeon beneath the Mountain where the party finds itself is actually the inside of an enormous sleeping dragon that has been trapped by the Mountain for 1000 years. And everyone says the Mountain is going to move again…

Question about combat.

Question about combat.

Question about combat. Does combat take place simultaneously or one-at-a-time? For instance, Goblin attacks Fighter, Fighter reacts by attacking (Hack and Slash). Fighter rolls a 7, rolls damage. Does enough damage to kill the Goblin. Is it over at that point, IE, the Fighter went first and killed the Goblin, OR since the Fighter rolled a 7, does the Goblin still get an attack, even though he’s “dead”?

I wasn’t expecting this to show up today.  Surprise, surprise!  (The shirt fits nicely, btw.)

Is it outside the realm of possibility that a magic item could grant a temporary bonus to a stat?

Is it outside the realm of possibility that a magic item could grant a temporary bonus to a stat? Say, a Plus One to Strength, as in our old friends the Gauntlets of Ogre Power? Or is it more fitting for said gauntlets to provide a cool move or other ability that isn’t just a stat bump?

Here’s a thing some folks might be interested in, if you’ve got access to a copy of InDesign and are looking to produce your own DW content. Thank Jason Morningstar for inquiring about it.

Oh crap! I was supposed to post this on Thursday but forgot!

So, in my last Dungeon World game, things started getting tense between the players and the Cult of the Crippled God.

They basically KNOW that the Cult is a front for the Worm God and is working with the assassins (At least, one group of them. The PCs haven’t clued in that there are two distinct groups of assassins.) but they don’t want to just go in there and kill all the peasants just for worshiping the wrong god.

So they’ve been creeping around, recruiting spies, even capturing and interrogating an acolyte, trying to find the information they need to bust up the cult with a minimum of violence.

However, the cultists totally know that the PCs are after them and holed up in their leaders tent, which they sanctified and protected with a magic barrier.

So Hyccorax decided “Screw their god’s protections, I’m going in there anyway!” and tried to force his way through the barrier. He got an 8 on his Defy Danger, of course and I told him “You can break through the barrier, but you’ll never be the same again if you do.”

He broke through the barrier, and we ended the session…

Now I need to figure out what the hell happens to Hyccorax!

I’m pretty sure that by visibly shattering their god’s protection and appearing in the tent like the devil himself he’s going to seriously challenge the faith of most of the new converts, and they’ll probably kill the high priest, so the cult is on the ropes…. But Hyccorax has to be forever changed by his brush with divine power.

Earlier we had established that the Worm God’s power has tainted the magic of the Earth Goddess (Hyccorax’s patron) and drawing on her power was making him weaker, so I was thinking of a move relating to that, but I’m coming up blank.

Does anyone out there have a suggestion?
