Bananas #dungeonworld action at PAX Games on Demand today! The party faced off against Death itself and I learned to love the Paladin’s moves in the process.

The adventurers have travelled to the Obsidian Pyramid. The Paladin seeks the answer to its mysteries; the desert Druid wishes to see its mysterious threat extinguished; the Wizard seeks a necromantic place of power he can use to restore his dead wife.

The Druid Discerns that the pyramid houses a Thallas device that can make the desert verdant and green. This makes the Druid very angry. He vows to destroy the device!

Inside the pyramid, they encounter the Chimera-Hydra guardian. The poor Ranger is smashed by its goat head and faces Death. Death will allow her to escape if she triggers the Thallas device and greens the desert. She refuses and is cast into oblivion.

But wait! The Paladin runs to her body, and Lays on Hands, begging Osiris to save her. He rolls a 7; she is restored to life and Death claims the Paladin instead.

Death offers the Paladin the same bargain: make the desert green and he may continue to walk the world and serve Osiris.

The Paladin, suspicious of Death’s motives, uses his Pierce Lies oath boon to LOOK INTO THE HEART OF DEATH. He learns the truth: the Lord of the Underworld wishes the desert verdant because the new life will kill the desert and its gods and spirits and he may claim their souls for himself! The Paladin will not be party to this, so he refuses and casts himself into oblivion.

The Wizard takes advantage of the Paladin’s death and the connection it creates to the underworld.  He casts Speak With Dead, pulling his wife’s spirit back into the world, and then follows it up with a Ritual to put his wife’s spirit in the Paladin’s body.  The Druid, sensing trouble, tackles him as he performs the final dance (an Interfere for -2).  Due to the interference, the Wizard gets a mixed success on his necromantic Defy Danger. The wife is restored to the Paladin’s body, but the corridor to the underworld allows Death to reach through the planes and activate the Thallas Device!  Suddenly, clouds pour heavy rains over the desert.  Everything drowns or dies in a flash flood.  Death, roaring with delight, drags the desert spirits and gods to the underworld.

We narrate epilogues.  The Druid dedicates himself to haunting and terrorizing the farms that spring up in the lush former desert. The Paladin’s soul is rescued from oblivion by a grateful Osiris and he carries on with his battle against evil in another dimension.  The Wizard and his Paladin-wife, after a “honeymoon period,” set about figuring out how to raise their dead child from the grave next…

In yesterday’s game, the druid turned into a griffin to battle another, died and rolled a 8 on a Last Breath.

In yesterday’s game, the druid turned into a griffin to battle another, died and rolled a 8 on a Last Breath. Death took part of their soul and returned them to life, into the form of a black griffin, and they rose like a phoenix to fight some more. It was awesome. Dungeon World ❤

I just started running a DW adventure of Jason Lutes Servants of the Cinder Queen. We’ve got a thief, a shaman, and an immolator all trying to survive within the catacombs of an active volcano! So far the game is shaping up to be a really fun adventure for me and the players. I’m posting here over the next few months as we play out the adventure in case anybody would like to find out how things go!

Repost – Ranged Skirmish Actual Play Example

This was written to answer the question how two ranger fighters would engage each other in Dungeon World. If the player character just repeats volley, nothing really cool happens unless they fail. That is not how the game works. So i tried to write up this example to show how it could be done better. Please feel free to comment or continue the example or ask questions.

Amanda the Ranger is enganged with a Gnoll Hunter in a shootout.

Amanda, the Gnoll is covering behind a wall but now he looks up, and aims a shot at you. What do you do?

now she could just fire back, but then she can’t dodge the arrow. Or she runs and dives for cover.

First is rolling volley and getting damaged in return.

Second is probably a defy danger. A 7-9 in my game then would be her getting to a place where she has cover but can’t fire back easily.

So now she cowers for a while, waiting for the hail of arrows to die down. It does. Amanda looks up.

“The gnoll is nowhere to be seen, what do you do?”

“I look around and listen for the sound of its paw”

“Sounds like you are discerning realities”

rolls and asks questions. Maybe things like “what happened here recently” (as in where did it leave pawprints) or “what should i be on the lookout for?” (the gnoll trying to circle you).

If she gets the position then she might be able to take a shot. But if that doesn’t take out the gnoll then it is your turn as the GM to make a move again.

Maybe you go for the “Strike at a moment of weakness” move.

“Amanda, you loose a few arrows but as you reach for the next arrow it gets stuck in your quiver. The gnoll realises this and despite the knife in its leg starts to run at you, spit dripping from its mouth. It’s to close to fire easily at it. What do you do?”

Can someone perhaps direct me to a list or instruction on the measurement system used in Dungeon World (e.g. time, distance, speed)? I remember the basic ones like distance and time and so on, but I’m sure I’m missing some. I think it was in the Dungeon World GM manual, but I read that thing such a long time ago xD

Thanks!

It had been a while since I played a live, Dungeon World campaign, but I’m finally playing again.

It had been a while since I played a live, Dungeon World campaign, but I’m finally playing again. This is my first time playing a Paladin, and now I can say I’ve played all the cores. 🙂

Meet the exiled elves and the followers of Zawa, as they venture south into the desert of Eternal Summer.

Thank you Damian Jankowski for being our brilliant GM, and thank you Kaillan Reukers, Ian Francis, and Rory MacLeod for playing such awesome characters alongside Lux!

In today’s game Ville Halonen ‘s druid turned into an elephant and tried to tackle a dwarven stone golem in a dungeon room swarming with spiders. The golem fell on top of him crushing and killing him. And what did he roll for dealing with death? Snake eyes.

Priceless

So just finished a 2 part DW adventure run by Steve Kunec.

So just finished a 2 part DW adventure run by Steve Kunec. This one went better than his first attempt (which ended in tpk in the first session). A more straight forward adventure, our band of adventurers went after some pirates who had escaped imprisonment after the ship transporting them was run aground during a storm.

The group split up, and my half found most of the pirates hiding in an old Dwarven mind. Between fighting them and an Ankheg, our barbarian turned 3 of them into her henchmen. The rest of our group encountered some squid people, stopped an arcane ritual they were attempting, found the rest of the pirates, and brought them to justice. Our cleric gained an acolyte as well.

Much like the first adventure, I had a lot of fun. I know he’s got other stuff he’s planning to run right now, but I do hope Steve will revisit DW again somewhere down the road.
