I recently GM’ed my 3rd DW session with my now-no-longer-quite-so-newbie group of players. It was a blast, definitely our best session so far, and that is in no small part thanks to all of you who took the time to respond to my previous GM’ing queries here in the Tavern.

Your advice on how to deal with 6- rolls in particular (basically: (a) the effect doesn’t have to be related to the attempted move, and (b) you can always just ask your players themselves for good suggestion) has really made a difference. The players liked it, I liked it, and everything was just a lot more relaxed as a result.

I built the session around Joe Banner’s Call The Locksmith one-shot (https://www.patreon.com/posts/call-locksmith-3458579), which also turned out to be a really good idea. It supplies just enough hooks and support for a GM not so experienced at on-the-fly improvising yet, making things, again, a lot less frantic.

So anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you. And of course the session has also resulted in some new questions I’d like to get your advice on, but I’ll leave those for a separate post.

DW is the Indie Game of the Month on /r/rpg today over on Reddit, and a commenter mentioned that they’d love to find an Actual Play where the GM went back and commented on the thought processes behind the Moves he made.  So, I did that!  Welcome to “Inside My Head” article 1.

So Just played my first Dungeon World game in awhile, we were going to use Perilous Wilds to create the world but first an opening scene We start with a wizards tower, the players having delivered a really nice old Paladin that volunteers at Soup kitchens called Arcadius.

But dun dun dun the Wizard actually was going to use Arcadius saintly energy for nefarious means, the monk decided that he was going to run down the tower, but instead he ran down the tower about to hit the ground. The Executioner tried to save him but it was a monumental weight and he found himself hanging by his feet trying to hold on. The Wizard seeing this grabbed onto Arcadius and tried to put him into a cage. The Bard trying to convince the Wizard not to do this failed and a battle was about to happen. But at this point the executioner got up and stabbed the Wizard in the chest.

The Wizard Tower then started to crumble around them, the players tried to get out. The Druid Minotaur was able to change into a flying squirrel and said by to everyone. Fun was had with grappling hooks by the Cleric and Executioner. And the rest decided to use the stairs. While on the stairs the Bard decided to figure out if she knew anything about what was happening, turned out she did and that they were actually in an ancient Planar spaceship. She decided what the heck and convinced all the players to come on board.

So instead of a regions and cities on a fantasy map, we actually created different planes and decided what was all these planes. It was completely not what I was expecting but was damn cool and now we have so many different planes that we can explore and the players are on a ship that may need the saintly life force of people to run it.

I can say that was a bloody good reintroduction to Dungeon World. And I’m excited and terrified with the massive sweep we have created with all these planes.

Hello! This is the first episode of our Dungeon World Side Game.  We played this one when Kolton couldn’t attend our Main Game.  So we have Matt, Alex, and Kaetlyn playing and myself acting as GM.  We do character creation on Side A of this Disk and then…

The following was the hook I used to find players.

The following was the hook I used to find players.

The following was the hook I used to find players.

Near as we can tell, ninety years ago Gods rose again.  And no one was prepared for the ensuing disaster.  It was a dark day in history.  It takes a generation for a new religion to gain followers, train healers, build temples, establish infrastructure.  But it only takes one mad prophet to start a plague that brings civilization to it’s knees.  There is much that we still don’t know.  Who went mad first, the God or the Prophet? Was it the unfettered Titan influence that drove the god and his prophet insane?

All we know is that the disease destroyed everything.  Entire nations fell. So few people were left that fields lay fallow for decades.  Cities were reclaimed by nature.  But this was also a time of opportunity. For in the wake of destruction “monster” races were spared.  If it wasn’t for goblin/ogres/kobolds becoming farmers, undertakers, and caregivers even more would have been lost. Even with their help many cities disappeared, now little more than another set of overgrown ruins lost to the sand of time.  And not all monsters were willing to help, many gleefully destroyed those who once oppressed their kind.

Now two generations later, the “civilized races” are beginning to recover.  There are ruins to plunder and more knowledge lost than retained.  Will you take up sword and spell to delve long lost ruins, looking for treasure and answers among the ashes of civilizations lost past?

* * * * * *

I had five players.  They picked a theme of a traveling circus with the idea that at the end of the world people still care about bread and circuses.   They chose to favor monster races and while asking them about what monster meant we fleshed out a lot about the disaster and the state of the world.

They also specified that the circus menagerie was to invoke a “Dark Dr Seuss”.   I mined their bonds and background for ideas and peppered the with questions.  The questions and answers and back stories got woven together here (https://sites.google.com/site/houseofmasks/campaigns/after-the-plague/summaries/introductions)

I loved all the cliffhangers.  We all had a great time.  Going to play again this weekend to find out what happens next.

We began with planning a 2 month overland journey to a new area they need for Their Big Goal. I threw in the Perilous Wilds exploration and travel moves [quite poorly, I wasn’t as familiar as I should have been].

First, they came across a traveler (Discovery) who offered some whiskey for companionship along the route. Later, as a hard move he ended up stealing 3 bolts of silk in the night, was noticed, chased, and beaten unconscious. The silk was covered in mud, torn from branches, and generally not salvageable.

In the next town, we played a bit of merchant-ing. I quickly threw together a custom version of the Supply move to cover sales – they specify and explain the intended markup, 10+ they sell it at that markup, 7-9 half the markup and they can’t sell it all.

We also learned that the area has a religious Festival of Lights where they publicly burn volunteers alive for their god. More on this to come…

On the way out of town, the merchant guild hit them with taxes. Turns out they would actually take a 2 coin loss after taxes, so they bard decides to haggle and we end up Parleying with a promise of transporting something along their way free of charge if they can get a break on taxes. Bard rolls boxcars. “Take some freight for us up to the capitol city and we’ll wave the fee.”

So in the morning when the 3 large crates big enough to fit a horse each is loaded onto their wagon, and they get a few hours outside of the city, a Scout Ahead (Perilous Wilds) roll of 6- has the scout come back to the wagon with no new information.

That’s when one of the crates starts crying. I seems not all of those in the Festival of Lights are volunteers.

First lunchtime game back from last year’s cliffhanger.

First lunchtime game back from last year’s cliffhanger. Monstrous lightning-wyrm draws a deep breath, and an NPC hireling reaches for his harpoon.

Ranger stands between them, declares “No fighting during a crisis!” and rolls to Parley with them both. Partial success with the NPC because he has leverage.

No leverage with the monster, though. It burns him to a crisp, 9 points of his 8 remaining. Golly, you know how to paint a scene, 2016.
