If you wanted to add black powder weapons (muskets and pistols) to Freebooters, how would you handle it?

If you wanted to add black powder weapons (muskets and pistols) to Freebooters, how would you handle it? I’m thinking I’d just reskin the Heavy Crossbow as a musket, adding a “Loud” tag, and reskin the Light Crossbow as a pistol, making it 1-handed and adding “Loud”. I’m interested in hearing how other folks might approach it.

I’ve been using the random dungeon generation to great effect in my campaign. However, one thing stumps me: unthemed areas. When such an area is discovered, do you simply give it a bland description? Or maybe do you treat it the same as the theme currently in effect, using an outcome of themed area to switch themes? But then, how to tick down the clock?

Curious how this has played out and how Jason Lutes intended.

Played a fun game of Freebooters on the Frontier via Hangouts last night. My goal was to try to deliver a solid 4-hour game, but it stretched out to nearly 5. Have to pare down my approach, maybe set a limit at 3 players?

Thanks to +David Perry, +Horst Wurst, +Jeremy Strandberg, and +John Marron for bringing their respective A-games. Any GM who gets one of you at their table should consider themselves lucky (like I do).

I’m signed up to run Freebooters 2e for Gauntlet Con, but want to test out my idea for a one-shot first.

Anyone interested in helping me do this over a 4-hour Hangouts game? I’m aiming for 3-4 players, and right now I’m looking at Wednesday, August 30, 7pm-11pm EST.

So I’m planning on running servants of the cinder queen as a funnel in a weeks time.

How would you go about adjusting some of the enemies to fit the funnel scenario? For example I noticed the guardian of the library had 4 armor which would mean the villagers couldn’t really land blows plus it’s 1d8+4 damage would outright kill a villager (Which I’m fine with but could do with a few surviving past the library). Should I keep the stats the same and have them hope they can find a way to subdue it? or lower its armor slightly to make it a tough but winnable fight? or just adjust a bit on the fly as to how its going?

Also for anyone who’s played the module as a funnel or regular DW, when/how many times did you encounter Thorde Skull? Did he get to the book of rains first? Any suggestions related to the module or not welcome.

It just occurred to me that it may be possible to use Black Hack creatures (and the logic to create them) with FotF.
