A new character from Sandy Pug Games, The Judge!

This came out of a lil goof around I did for a close friend but the whole concept was so good I thought hey, might as well expand it into a full sheet! The main move they get is the ability to create rules during combat that everyone, allies included, must follow, so for example, they can declare at the start of combat that no one is allowed to use Ranged weapons, and if anyone breaks that rule, the Judge gets to hurt them for it.

Theres also a bunch of other moves about speaking to elements, creating laws, debates and so on. I’m especially proud of the Death Move. Let me know what ya’ll think!

So I was thinking recently, what kind of characters are just not represented very much in our beloved RPGs? And one thing stuck out like a sore thumb – The Mission Control Team. The ace hacker, the voice in the ear and the eye in the sky. It was obvious why, not being with the party is a huge pain for both the player and the GM, not to mention issues with HP and combat.

But it seemed like such a cool idea, I had to take a crack at it, and so I present, The Handler!

Present with the party only via an incorporeal projection, the Handler is permanently affixed to another PC, sharing their HP and working with them in a sort of symbiotic relationship, while providing remote support to the team, doing research, “hacking” enemies and magical systems and so on. I intentionally made it so you could play this as either a mage or a more technologically inclined character too.

Probably the weirdest playbook I’ll ever write, I’m really proud of this. Hope you all enjoy it!

Just put up The Great Detective at DriveThru!

Just put up The Great Detective at DriveThru!

Just put up The Great Detective at DriveThru! Inspired by the recent surge in popularity for the old great detective stories, like Sherlock and Poirot, this is kind of a fantasy extension of what those stories are.

A lot of the moves here came from asking myself; if training and learning and dedication could lead to being strong enough to fight dragons or mastery over the elements of the universe, what would similar training yield when directed toward deduction, reason and logic? Hopefully I answered some of those questions well!

Enjoy!

Just in time for Thanksgiving, I’m releasing a new setting!

Just in time for Thanksgiving, I’m releasing a new setting!

Just in time for Thanksgiving, I’m releasing a new setting! I’ve talked about this a bit in the group, and a lot of ya’lls feedback really helped shape the book. This is my first ever physical release and I’m really proud of the design and art that went into this.

The setting itself is kind of a Weird-Fantasy mashup of Dredd, The Raid, Boy Scouts and Fury Road. Its set in a unique world where diverse races of people make their homes inside immense sky-scraper trees, and you, the Rangers, solve the problems they face.

“Before we were anything, we were nothing

Before we were together, we were alone

Before we were Rangers, we were Boughless

The world as we know it is an infinite forest, so dense that sun rarely pierces the canopy. Beasts and monsters lurk in the shadows, ready to eat anything even remotely unprepared. The only place that’s safe is inside massive, city sized trees, each housing a unique civilization – The Boughs.

That is, of course, unless you join The Rangers.

If you do, you’ll face down Ember-Hounds, teeth dripping with liquid fire. You’ll be called on to stop wars between Boughs, ambush Yix dealers peddling their enchanted drugs, solve mysteries of the endless Firmament deep underground, and explore the outer reaches of the Wastes. You’ll see things you wouldn’t imagine, you’ll tell stories even we won’t believe. It’s not safe, it’s not comfortable and you can’t count on fame and riches.

But we will remember you.

The Boughs cry out, we answer”

I know at least one of ya’ll played this at GenCon, but Sandy Pug just released the Infernal Bone Machine!

I know at least one of ya’ll played this at GenCon, but Sandy Pug just released the Infernal Bone Machine!

It’s an adventure set inside a Lich’s computer dimension, where all the computation is done by automated skeletal minions, and the heroes are effectively fantasy tech support, sent in to repair the thing after a virus shuts it down. Anti-Virus Kobolds, Memory Ghosts and a giant Whale-Skeleton-Golem ensue.

It uses a couple of cool things, Blanks for every section that give you questions and statements to have players fill in, near the end it utilizes the Starter Set concept, with a list of Impressions, Stuff and Enemies. I considered adding Flags too but couldn’t see a way to do it with this adventure, maybe next time!

In particular the Companion Class collection adds a slight twist on the Custom Playbook thing, and our DW Adventure has been really well receieved, get them cheap!

Hey folks!

Hey folks!

Hey folks!

I just released this pack of what I call Companion Classes – they’re sort of like expanded compendium classes that you pick at character gen, kinda like racial modifiers but with 10 Advancement moves, 1 background, 2 new Drives, a death move and 3 starter moves to pick from, in addition to your standard playbook. This way you can have a Minotaur Fighter or a Dragonspawn Wizard, for example.

These books are focused on playing as monster races, a Minotaur, Dragonspawn and Ratman, very thematic, and I playtested the concept pretty extensively.

Alternatives to Dungeon World!

Alternatives to Dungeon World!

Alternatives to Dungeon World!

Dungeon World is the best and I love it BUT some people close to me whom I trust greatly have suggested I try out Fellowship, claiming it to be a better version of Dungeon World’s core idea.

After 2 sessions I really really enjoy Fellowship but it seems to scratch a different itch for me, tho I’m having trouble putting it into words, its sort of like I want Conan but Fellowship is LoTR. Thoughts? are there any other PBtA games you think are Dungeon World-ish that manage to do the epic fantasy hero genre really well?
