I’m getting ready to run DW for a few newbie RPG players. They are huge fans of fantasy literature, however, and have expressed an interest in playing in a world like Robin Hobbs’ Realm of the Elderlings. They are especially interested in exploring the magic systems therein, the Wit and the Skill. Can anyone recommend any playbooks that would be similar to character types you might see in those books? I found Warg, which is kind of close to a Witted person with an animal companion, but doesn’t seem quite right. Thoughts?

Over on Reddit a user named Vindexus created and shared this pretty awesome tool for creating magic items in DW.

I’ve been thinking about running a DW or BW game set in REH’s Hyborea. What would I need for DW to really capture the mood of a good Conan yarn? Would standard play books work or are there better alternatives?

Has anyone created a list of “standard” D&D type magic items translated into more interesting DW magic items?

Has anyone created a list of “standard” D&D type magic items translated into more interesting DW magic items?  I’d love to see a few examples of the translation process.  For example, how to make a ring of feather fall more interesting?  Should it just work or should there be a roll with consequences?  Should all, or most, DW magic items that “just work” in D&D require a roll?

I’ve been asked to run a DW demo at Free RPG day in June.  Any suggestions?  I’m thinking about the Slave-Pits by Johnstone Metzger.  I’ve read that others have had a lot of success with that one.

Has anyone had any experience running Jason Morningstar’s Slave-Pits of Drahzu using only the slave play books?

My recent desire to increase tension in my game by limiting the Paladin’t healing has led to a discussion about whether the Paladin can actually heal himself.  When you look at the text it seems to indicate that the Paladin cannot, in fact, heal himself, unless you consider him an ally of himself.  If you look at Clerical healing, however, you also see the “ally” tag, which seems to indicate that the Cleric cannot heal himself either.  Do you guys allow the Paladin and Cleric to use their healing powers on themselves?  If so, how do you account for a roll of 7-9 for the Paladin when that would transfer the very damage and diseases that he is attempting to heal on himself…to himself?

So I’m having trouble with the Paladin in my group spamming his healing.

So I’m having trouble with the Paladin in my group spamming his healing.  I’ve already stated that he takes the damage he heals on a 7-9, but he took the move that allows him to heal himself as well as a target, so that almost makes that rule moot.  I feel this is draining the tension out of the game.  I talked about limiting his healing to Level per Day, but they don’t like that rule.  So, I had another idea.  Since the Paladin in question is a Paladin of Dionysius and claims to be a “Party Paladin” I thought about adding a consequence to his healing.  On a roll of 7-9, the target is healed but is drunk for 1d4 – CON hours.  A drunk character would suffer a -1 ongoing to DEX and WIS, but have a +1 to CHA when dealing with social situations.  Is this rule out of line?  I haven’t mentioned it to the group yet, so I don’t know how they’ll react.

I’m thinking of picking up some of the awesome looking DW adventures by Johnstone Metzger.

I’m thinking of picking up some of the awesome looking DW adventures by Johnstone Metzger.  Does anyone have any reviews or advice on how to use them in an existing game?  Which ones are the best?  They’re very reasonably priced, but my wife is not very reasonable when it comes to my RPG purchases, so I have to be very selective…and secretive.

How do you guys run battles against NPC wizards or spell-casting monsters?  Do you just use spells off playbooks, or do you just kind of make up the magic on the fly?
