I have a Ranger player who continually forgets about his animal companion. I think he’d just prefer to play without one. Has anyone made a Ranger playbook/build that doesn’t integrate an animal companion?

I have the opposite problem—one of my play groups seems to want to form a travelling zoo.
What do you consider “ranger-y”, sans animal companion? Archer guy? Tracker?
Lester Ward I think he’s looking for a scout/tracker kind of vibe
You can make a playbook using the class warfare appendix
Use it or lose it! 🙂
Quick-n-dirty house rule: cross off the Animal Companion and give the ranger a custom move instead.
Very very lazy house rule: make them choose one from the “levels 2-5 list instead.
Version 1.4 of Fourth World my drift of Dungeon World to the setting of Earthdawn has a Scout playbook.
The not-yet-released 1.5 will contain a shift to using Perilous Wilds. Among other things, this will change the Scout significantly.divnull.com – Fourth World 1.4 relayout | DivNull Productions
There was a very similar thread posted here two weeks ago. Linked below is an alternate Ranger playbook I built from Class Warfare. The build included Ranger, Sharpshooter, and Wayfarer.
