I recall seeing somewhere a doc or post about making new weapons, and balancing their tags and price, but I can’t find it for the life of me. Might also be an annex to a custom class, or part of a further hack of DW. Anybody know where I can find something like this?

I’m asking because in a few weeks I’m gonna run a DW campaign in Yoon-Suin and I wanted to convert all kinds of crazy Indian weapons (bagh nakh, gada, urumi and the like) so there are some differences with the “usual” weapons, i.e. a katar is not exactly the same as your everyday dagger.

  1. I personally wouldn’t bother.

The vast majority of DW weapons fall into 3 categories:

hand weapons (knife, shiv, a katar, a bagh nakh): hand, 1 wt

most weapons (mace, club, ax, short sword): close, 1 wt

powerful weapons (sword, battle ax, flail, gada): close, 2 wt

There really isn’t any attention payed to “realism” or “balance” within or between those buckets.

You certainly can make the really “crazy” stuff (like an urumi) have extra tags. Like, I’d probably make it close, reach, precise, 1 piercing, dangerous, awkward and let there be some sort of move to let you ignore dangerous and awkward.

Or, just encourage the Fighter make a urumi for their special weapon. Like sword + versatile (close + reach) + sharp (2 piercing).

  2. There’s really only one or two tags that really mess with the idea of “balance” and they’re the purely mechanical ones (piercing, precise). Because of the weight given to the fictionality of tags, you can really give them whatever feels right, and then roll the applications of those tags around the rolls.

  3. Yeah it was mainly for the mechanical tags (piercing, precise, +damage, weight, cost), and not really a fine balance but more like a broad guideline to avoid having one weapon completely overshadow the others, and to have some more variety.

The thing is, I’m sure I saw that somewhere in the last few months. There was like a few base templates (dagger, sword, bow etc) and you could, say, reduce the weight in exchange for a higher cost. Just to have a rough estimate and go from there. I just don’t know where I found it.

    Thank you anyway!
