Quick question: can NPC’s have more than one instinct or knack? While running a game yesterday, I accidentally merged an unused NPC with the NPC that I was currently using, and in doing so, gave the NPC I was using two instincts and knacks. Should I choose only one of each, or should I leave both sets?

  1. The Instincts and Knacks are really intended for improvisation. Your big deal recurring NPCs may have more than one instinct, and they should probably be custom written, not picked off a list. “To resurrect the Worldeater” totally fits a campaign level motive but isn’t on that list.

  2. Of course. Why not? I think the deal is that you need at least one to give the character some kind of agenda/motive and some kind of thing that players can remember them by. I would be more leery of multiple instincts than multiple knacks, but a double (and even conflicting) instinct could be fun to play. This isn’t a great example, but off the top of my head – Instinct(s): be recognized as the best, be humble. This would create an artisan who desperately wants to be recognized, but needs the PCs to draw attention to his work.
