What are the community’s thoughts on when a fighter choose fists and reach/close for range? Have any of you personally had a fighter do this? If so how did the player describe how their weapon functioned?

  1. Never happened. At first glance it seems not a very “follow the fiction” choice. There may be several cool explanation for it, expecially if the group agreed on a high fantasy game. I’d personally go with some manga-style impossible martial art style that projects kinetic force far away or something like that…

[edited: the last part was redundant with what you said]

  2. The blade could be made of an incorporeal material, so it could hit at any of those lengths. Or, maybe the spirits within the blade guide it to such an extent that it feels weightless and easy to maneuver.

  3. “The overbalanced lurches and sways of my Drunken Fist style give me a deceptively long reach.”

“The mystic runes tattooed onto my hands flare as I punch the ground, sending a shockwave rippling through the earth to smash into my enemy.”

“I flip a broken piece of paving stone into the air with my foot and then send it flying at him with a sudden kick.”

    “FLYING TACKLE!”

The cool thing is that each of the possible explanations comes with a different set of fictional assumptions and limitations.

  4. Adam Koebel and Jeff Johnston have the right of it. Ask your fighter how they achieve the awesome feat of hitting things at a distance with their mighty fists.

Also: “My giant metal fist shoots off my arm and smashes it in the face, then the metal chain retracts my fist back with a loud CLANK. It’s Beautiful. Life is beautiful.”

  5. I think it would depend on the style they want to portray, for me someone with Reach/Fists might just be able to leap in and out of fray quickly.

  6. Options I have seen, magical fists that are controlled by complex ninja hand maneuvers, gestures that cause skeletal fists to uppercut from the ground in front of the enemy, and shadow double that launches an attack, damage to the shadow flows back to the character. And perhaps the most epic I have seen, fighter who snapped his fingers and the speed and force of it acted like the pistol shrimps attack.

  7. How about a fighter with low-level psychic powers that allows him to take control, albeit briefly, of an opponent’s body?

The fighter could rename “Signature Weapon” to “Why are you hitting yourself?”
