Hey there, just finished prepping for session 2 of my DW game.

Hey there, just finished prepping for session 2 of my DW game. I’m expecting there’ll be some seaborne combat pretty soon (as in ship vs. ship) – has anyone already already done this? Custom moves, tags for ships, that sort of thing?

  1. Good timing – I was just about to post my draft document for pirate-themed games. I’ve not actually included anything on ship-to-ship combat (yet!) but the fronts and custom moves might be useful to you. (I’ll post separately so as not to derail the discussion.)

  2. #1 ship on ship combat is just like any other combat. set up the situation and ask – what do you do.

#2 Give the ship a control stat (1 or 2) and roll that when people are gunning at the other ship or making evasive maneuvers. When the crew helps, give them a +1 forward. The crew may only help with 1 or 2 things at the time.

    #3 continue making your moves

    #4 play to find out

#5 tell us how it went

  3. oh. Firing a cannon is volley, maneuvering so that you can’t be hit is Defy Danger with Control.

    Good 7-9 results would be

    – someone needs to get into the sails to unknot robe X there

    – you get there but your ship will go through the waves, sweeping valuable cargo from deck

When you attack them, describe the damage it does to ship and what will happen if no one takes care of it. If none of the player characters can fix something then make the crew do it (but then they can’t help with player moves)

Name the crew NPCs and tell them who dies and how.

  4. if you can, add “environmental factors” like cliffs, fogbanks, a maelstrom, a sea-serpent, strong swell, sirens, krakens, heavy rain

    all that jazz

  5. Andri Erlingsson is working on a Mounted Combat supplement for Dungeon World, which I hear is mostly finished, and I know it has rules on vehicles, including boats and shooting cannons at boats. He probably has some things to say about this.

  6. It’s undergoing final editing and getting some extra artwork done, but yes I’m doing Mounted Combat. Inverse World now also has a lot of the rules required to run mounts and vehicles, if you’re a backer…
