Hey, I’m putting together a pirates/nautical-themed campaign pack and I’d love any feedback, questions etc.

Hey, I’m putting together a pirates/nautical-themed campaign pack and I’d love any feedback, questions etc. Still to do: an example map or two, some kind of random events table, anything else I might have missed.

I’d like to put this on DrivethruRPG for pay-what-you-like; I’ve not published anything before so any advice to that end would be useful too. Thanks!

(+Nikitas Thlimmenos and +Guy Milner – this was what I mentioned, hope it’s useful.)

  1. Good point! Some kind of custom move, I think (“when you resist the call of the vermin king, roll + CON…”) The way I was thinking of playing it was only certain foods would be contaminated, and some (the player’s rations, the captain’s personal larder) would be safe. The cure might be the classic horror staple – kill the head zombie and everything returns to normal.

  2. How about this?

    When you feel a scratching in your gut, roll +CON. On a 10+, something is definitely wrong – you’re feeling sick (- 1 CON). On a 7-9, you spend the next few minutes helpless and retching on the ground. On a 6- one of the following happens, right now (GM’s choice).

    * Your teeth and nails grow sharper

    * Your eyes glow red

    * Fur is sprouting on your hands and arms

    * It’s getting hard to think (confused, -1 WIS)

    * You lash out at the closest meat

  3. Iacopo Benigni – thanks for the assist! Nikitas Thlimmenos glad you like it. Joel Watkins Michael Brewer  – agreed. I have this vision of the one savvy player who thought they’d save their own rations by scoffing the ship’s supplies, being the first to find out the food’s infected…

  4. I have to ask, because I’m mostly likely to use it in a game, what kind of resolutions/cures have you heard/used for the rotwhisker infestation?

  5. Joel Watkins I like the potential storyline options going to the temple (and beyond) could raise. But how much sex is the half-rat victim is likely to have?! Maybe something along the lines of “resist your ratty impulses” instead? (Con checks required at inopportune moments, tally up the failures and, if the player resisted more often than not, the monks can provide a cure more easily).

    Nate Marcel – how about a cache of Acacia seeds or a partially-dismantled shrine to Saosis being transported in the ship’s cargo? A drink of saltwater might help clear the infected food from a victim’s system, although the process won’t be very pleasant! (In any case a con check should be in order – possibly modified depending on how long the player’s been infected. On a 7-9, the symptoms abate, but only temporarily.)
