DW’ers, how do you handle your BBEG? I mean, let’s say I see a confrontation coming up with a high-end Mage. How would you handle the Mage proactively casting a spell?

Just say the effect as part of establishing the scene. “As you approach the clearing you see the archmage whispering arcane words and then he vanishes. You can still hear him laughing. What do you do?”
It’s part of the prep. When you have it prepep it happens. Just describe the effect of the spell to your players.
It’s a soft move. Setting up and awaiting a response.
Or it’s a hard move cause they failed.
Or it’s a Monster Move that’s worded to give the BBEG the advantage: “Weave a mighty spell at just the right time.”
Another time to sneak it in without it being a reaction is if the spell is part of starting in media res. The adventure starts with the spell.
I model my BBEG junk on the “stat-blocks” of the Dragon and the Lich. The moves are just a shade too-cool-for-school, and scream our-intrepid-heroes-are-outclassed.
