ALIGNMENT vs MOTIVATION
ALIGNMENT vs MOTIVATION
The alignment system doesn’t make much sense for my upcoming DW campaign; the categories are too broad and I’m looking for something that will capture a little more detail about the characters.
However, the mechanics couldn’t be removed outright, they needed to be re-skinned or replaced; players rely on the XP their alignment provides in order to advance at the proper rate.
So I’m working on a personal motivation system to replace alignment. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Dungeon World is a big part of that talk 🙂

BAG OF THE ABYSS
BAG OF THE ABYSS
1 weight
The bag can hold any number of items as long as they can fit the opening (about a foot across, 1/2 as wide). Items placed in the bag do not increase its weight, nor is there a limit to how much it can carry. When you attempt to retrieve an item placed in the bag, roll+nothing. On a 10+ you find the item you were looking for. On a 7-9, the item has been somewhat altered, OR you have to take something similar. Choose one and the GM will describe it. On a 6- You’ve pulled out something that had best been left alone.

This weekend my group is starting a new campaign. It’ my turn to DM and I’ve convinced the players to jump into #DungeonWorld .
I’m going to start in media res and have a few ideas of where the next few adventures could go… but I still want to give the players the option to choose what the game will be like.
My plan is to show them these three images I got from googling concept art. Each one represents a different front. I’m adding some notes to each image.
This screen from #MonumentValley would make a really interesting way to open up a First Session.
This screen from #MonumentValley would make a really interesting way to open up a First Session. We’re starting a new campaign this month, so I’ve been thinking of interesting ways of launching into it.
I’m aiming for minimal prep, and incorporating a few ideas from my Emergent Narrative talks. Other ideas:
Taking two songs from a random playlist in iTunes and incorporating the band name, song title, or lyrics from each.
Going through a folder of concept art and incorporating the first image that stirs the players’ imagination.
Draw Maps, Leave Blanks.

Presentation went well, and inspired some good discussion afterwards.
I’ve been refining parts of this presentation for the better part of a year.
I’ve been refining parts of this presentation for the better part of a year. Dungeon World had a big impact on my thoughts around how deep you can go with player agency, and how that can lead to strong emotional context for player actions.

If you live in #Toronto , I’m giving a presentation this Wednesday at CreateInTO. The subject is “Emergent Narrative, or What We Can Learn From Playing Dungeons & Dragons”
I’m going to cover some of my thoughts on how we can develop storytelling techniques for games, and VR.
If I am honest, the #dnd title is more of a placeholder for #DungeonWorld and RPGs in general, since the former will resonate more with the general public.
If you’re interested in coming, here’s the Meetup link: http://www.meetup.com/CreateInTO/events/219859637/
Hmmm.
Hmmm… has anyone tried making a DW hack for #Destiny? Seems like that universe is rife with dungeony, ruiny exploration…
