So today I have to go back to my 4week hiatus’ed DW game. Loosely modelled on the “chains of Promathia” expansion / campaign from FFXI, we last left the party camped at the entrance to the Spire of Holla

The question is, how can I make it feel fresh and different after such a break when I myself am feeling more than a bit grey about the whole thing?

so a fair few years ago i played / ran a lot of Talislanta 3rd Edition.

To make monsters / matters easier i condensed down a load of monsters and converted a load of Diablo 2 mobs to T3 stats and put them on these nifty T-cards. i also had a folder that would carry about 30 or so in easy to access format. theyre also colour coded to what “type” of monster it is (Beast / demon / undead etc), and sorting through my old gaming boxes i have re found them…

given that i have the day off today and the weather is too bad for me to play too much Ingress (big joke there..) i’m going to see about repurposing the cards for DW

given the simplicity of DW mobs has anyone else tried index cards for reference?

best Dungeon World Intro session ever.

folks had chosen playbooks already – we have a Fighter, Druid, Bard, Mage and Witch.

a brief explanation of what the stats represent, and how to choose the options – not difficult, given the layout of each playbook – a round of introductions and then choosing bonds.

this i think was one of the best bits.

this then led to my scene setting – waking up in a dungeon cell – and my questions to determine the nature of the campagin front –

Why were you at the Symposium Arcanum? who if anyone sponsored your trip?

where was it held?

who attacked your caravan?

and why were you spared death?

queue squabbling over how to break out of the cell, Hobgoblins in strange armour, “Form of the Rat!”, dropped explosive potions (never a good thing), plenty of Ice, and a beheaded demon-snake-woman.

amazing.

So in this week’s episode my son’s Elven Wizard used his “Contact Spirits” spell to find out what was making all the noise approaching the camp they had made alongside a forest trade road. He called on “the spirit of sight”. Which took me back a notch, I was expecting something more specific or arcane.

Obviously the spirit in question did it’s best to describe the triffid that was stalking them…. Not the most useful spirit to call, granted, but inventive nonetheless.

My game and first few fronts are centred round The Starfall – a meteorite that has alien and warping magical power.

The party started out in an abandoned forest temple investigating why animals won’t go there. It’s full of goblins, who it transpires are using the Starfall as a power source to call an avatar of Malgubiyet to further their aims.

I’ve written some custom moves for when characters, if they are foolish enough, to either arcane study or ingest the Starfall. This will grant them Hold that they can spend on later magical or physical tasks, but runs the risk of gaining Mark, which represents increasing corruption by the Starfall. Both moves have “if a character has mark > CON, well, that’s bad news”.

The party’s wizard, in 3 moves, has gained 2 mark and has a CON of +0.

And i have no idea of how to make this bad.

I have half a compendium class, Starfall Initiate, that requires a move to join, but don’t know how to play it if the player (my son, who is 11..) chooses not to attempt to join the class.

We had our second play session last night and got to test out “how DW works with A player missing” (one of the reasons I switched from MHRPG and WFRP was that one of the three players in our group often cannot make it, and too-complex games fall over because the other two players are novices, gaming wise)

Short answer: it’s okay.

The character driven narrative both benefitted and suffered as the two remaining players got a chance to shine a bit more. Barbazar’s player is more than a little larger than life and his playing style is quite, umm, expressive (he’s banned from playing bards or any other class that sings as he himself will burst into song with zero provocation) and his absence i reckon helped the other players get a bit more into character.

It fell to me to shadow-play the character which on top of being DM and GM and notewriting and so on was a bit more of a push than it’s been when we’ve played games like pathfinder and dnd.

Still, rooms were cleared, goblins slain, and more of the mystery of the Forest Temple Ruin was uncovered. Again we recorded the session, I’ll link the uploaded files when I’m home and off this bloody phone.

With Monster Moves, I presume that they have access to things like Hack and Slash too? Are monster moves played totally in response to player moves or as GM do I initiate moves when the characters have no or delayed response to the question “what do you do?”

So how much time do people spend on penning adventure fronts when not too sure how long the campaign will last?

From what I can tell it looks like it’s not necessary to craft a perfected masterpiece, especially as my games are usually very off the cuff (another reason why DW is pretty perfect for me) , but I don’t want to be short-changing my players.

do the tags messy and forceful have any effect other than to add flavour to the fiction?

Forceful i can understand, battling at the edge of a cliff or on a narrow bridge and with a decent roll your characters are learning that falling =/= flying. also useful to add flavour to those pesky 6- rolls.

i’m having a harder time deciphering how to use Messy. other than sam raimi-esque one-hit-one-kill blows.

we are (slightly) hindered by a) Tomas, my son, having a bedtime and b) a baby in the room. she’s cute as all get out but a bit of a fun distraction.

cast was myself as GM, Tomas as Icalike the Elven Wizard, Darren Turner  as Barbazar the Bone breaker, and Charli Kingston as Erith the Ranger.

enjoy!
