I have had several DW sessions where players try an emphatic speech when speaking to an NPC, but today, I had my first Oscar Nominated, Almost Moved the GM to Tears, We Heard the Film Score Swelling in the Background honest-to-Glob I will not ask this guy to roll+CHA because it was really that good Appeal to Awesomeness speech.

I wish I had recorded it, but here’s my best recollection of the phrasing as the Elven Ranger spoke to the Grizzled Veteran in the Dying Town:

“Those townsfolk down there are sheep, without direction. You’re the only one here with a scrap of honour. Show them. Build something. Take this money, hire someone to start building boats again, and make this town the great port it should be. Once your ships are built, I will sail with you through the mist to negotiate trade with my people.”

Our Ranger threw me for a loop today. He had chosen the Wild Empathy move when last he levelled, and I wasn’t aware.

Ranger: “Are there any animals in the town?”

GM: “One dog, a couple of cats, a few goats”

Ranger: “I go down to the docks first thing in the morning, buy some fish and sit down to feed and speak with the cats”

GM: “…um…okay?”

Ranger: “I ask the cats what has happened to bring the townsfolk so low”

Cat: “Hungry.”

Ranger: “I just gave you some fish. What’s wrong with the town?”

Cat: “Hungry. Hungry. Sad. Hungry.”

Ranger: “Why are the people unfriendly?”

Cat: “Hungry. Broken. Town, people broken. Spirits broken. Hungry.”

Ranger: “Do you ever go up to the graveyard on the cliff?”

Cat (hair standing on end, hissing): “Not there. Don’t like light there.”

Ranger: “The moon?”

Cat: “Not sky-light. Rain-light. Rain-growl.”

Ranger: “…Lightning? Thunder?”

GM: * Grins *

This is the map my 7-yo DM drew before running my solo adventure today.

This is the map my 7-yo DM drew before running my solo adventure today. He had never DM’d before and he was awesome. His only flaw was showing mercy during some of my half-dozen missed rolls.

Okay, Tavernites!

Okay, Tavernites!

Okay, Tavernites! Who’d like to give me a QuickPinion on this? Our heroes may find themselves hurriedly scrambling upwards through the branches whilst fending off forest guardians.

===

Ascending the Forest Defiant

When you make a move in the Forest Defiant , on a 12+, you may climb an additional row beyond the 10+ result. On a 7-9, choose one:

* Fall one row

* Disturb the guardians

When you deal damage in the Forest Defiant, you may forfeit the damage to choose one:

* Gain the Forceful tag for this attack

* Remove the Forceful tag from an attack against you

* Climb one row higher

I am trying to keep it simple, and keep the forest dynamic in terms of constant movement of all combatants, both upwards and downwards. Action Scene! Impending Doom! Music! BAM!

The Truthbrand

The Truthbrand

The Truthbrand

A bracelet of 26 flat crystal/stone beads (or maybe iron coins), each with a single letter of runic alphabet engraved on each face, or cast right through.

When you ask a question of the bracelet, it will brand the letters of response into the wrist of its wearer.

The wearer will need to unscramble the response, entertaining the possibility that it might require repeated letters.

Take a week to heal this between uses or risk confusing the answer with the lingering extra letters.

It’s a direct line to a demon. Maybe it is trapped in the bracelet, bound to answer truthfully until the bracelet is broken, releasing it. Once released, it only tells lies out of spite, but don’t let the players know. It might not even let them live.

Here’s a tiny idea I had ready for last session, but didn’t need to use (because no-one made the mad mage angry)

Gargoyle Compendium Class

(when poisoned with stone syrup)

When you become a gargoyle, move your DEX and CHA modifiers to your STR and Armour as you see fit. Your DEX and CHA mods then become 0 and you take the SCARRED condition until cured of gargoylism.

If you gain a level in gargoyle form, choose one of the following moves:

A Stone’s Throw, as the Crow Flies

You sprout wings and your DEX returns to normal. Reduce either your strength or armour accordingly, and you fly as easily as you walk.

Rock-candy Mountain

When you have just bitten someone, roll+CON

* On a 10+, they turn to stone.

* On a 7-9, your bite transfers gargoylism to the victim; their armour becomes 3 but you take +1 ongoing using DEX to evade them.

* On a miss, no effect beyond the damage you dealt.

Still as a Statue

When you impersonate a statue or rock formation, roll+CON. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 2. Spend one hold each time an individual or group pass by you to remain convincing.

[1] Assign one compass point per player, randomly or at their choice: North, South, East, West, Here or Elsewhere. Elsewhere could mean another country, planet, or dimensional plane.

[2] Describe the terrain of that area (or choose it randomly) and give it an evocative name.

[3] If it is your homeland, name one good feature of its landscape, inhabitants, culture or history. If it is foreign, name one thing your people fear about travelling there. The GM will balance the scales, adding threats or wonders as required, perhaps asking players whose characters are foreign to a homeland chosen by another player.

[4] Any directions left unchosen are unknown to you, to be discovered during play. Place a dense forest, vast desert, formidable mountains or even an ocean in the way, to explain why no-one has returned with a description of the place. Mayhap it is rumoured to be guarded by a monster?

[5] If there is a steading in your homeland, you lead the creation of its stats. Foreign steadings are either generated collaboratively, or in secret by the GM, as required.

[6] Should anyone complain about unnatural geography, either work/play together to explain it, or simply exclaim “MAGIC!” and move on for now.
