I’m reading through Fate Core right now, and I was like “hey they have a list of skills?” and was then put down a little because I generally think skill lists are restrictive

Then I saw Fate Accelerated Edition, in which the skills are replaced by the six stats Careful, Clever, Flashy, Forceful, Quick and Sneaky.

The core system only support four general types of actions; Create Advantage, Overcome, Attack and Defend. I can’t really see how this system would play much differently than any *World game, except for the system being more “generic”.

Thoughts?

I figured the crew in this group had some interesting things to say on the topic, so if you have any advice or an anecdote, please tell me about it 🙂

How many of you have GM’ed without any prep? How did it go? What worked? What didn’t?  What system did you use? Lengthy anecdotes (as well as short ones) are greatly appreciated. 🙂

If we disregard the fact that I find the above questions tremendously interesting in and of themselves, then the point is that I’m gathering some data for some blog posts on playing without any prep.

So far, I’ve only written the why: Why I think you should try it out. I’ve yet to write anything about how to do it properly.

Sometimes you just want to scream “Hulk smash!” and cleave some goblins, but it seems a bit bland when you are not the same size as the Hulk. Meet the minotaur, a new fighter race for people who like to bludgeon their foes into submission! Or apart

Minotaur: When putting your full weight behind your blows, hammers and axes you wield gain the forceful and messy tags.

So, this is the first part of the write-up of a session of Dungeon World.

So, this is the first part of the write-up of a session of Dungeon World. This might very well be the most detailed write up I’ve made so far, but I think I owe it to the players, as the “boring and obvious” method really added layer upon layer of detail and background.

So, this is an example of how much detail you can pack unto a game in roughly 3 hours, when you go with your first thought about everything, instead of trying to be clever.

I really love the fact that I can seriously abuse characters in DW, without really worrying about whether or not I’m going too far.

Last session, Misha Polonsky, who played Cadeus the Fighter, rolled 3 misses in a combat, and the third time I decided to up the ante a little; the elite soldier he was fighting might have hit only the armor protection Cadeus’ wrist, but the bone just below the wrist snapped.

We discussed what it meant; the bone wasn’t splintered, so he asked if he could still use the hand. I told him yes, but he’d have to defy danger by enduring (+CON) because of the pain.

Yet, it never became a problem, because his spear wasn’t two-handed. Really just added flavor and suspense 🙂

By the way, the fight with that soldier was epic, Misha Polonsky, despite all the trouble he brought you.

OK, this just occurred to me.

OK, this just occurred to me.

OK, this just occurred to me. When I write Actual Play reports, they are usually written two to three days after the session. During the session I take notes, but I rarely look at them after the game has concluded.

This has let me to to describe the adventures as I will remember them, even though that might not exactly be the way they went down.

I don’t think it’s a problem at all, actually I think it’s great, because the way you remember the game is much more important than what actually happened.

The strange thing though; when I remember the battle at the top of the tower against those demons, it comes alive in my head, like a favorite movie you have seen so many times. I’m pretty sure a lot of the details were never mentioned, but they are there anyway.

I’m currently reading a book called Play Unsafe, by Graham Walmsley.

I’m currently reading a book called Play Unsafe, by Graham Walmsley. (Wauw, just realized he was in one of my circles, lol)

It’s a brilliant book so far, and one thing he mentions is that we should build on the ideas of others by saying “yes, and…” and stuff like that.

I had a funny thought when reading this, and it was that moves in PbtA games actually do this. All of them are typically either a “yes” result on a strong hit, or a “yes and” on a weak hit.

Just a thought I wanted to share.

OK, I was supposed to GM something via hangouts today, but alas the person who arranged it all couldn’t come anyway.

I have made arrangements to actually be able to play tonight, and I don’t want to see that wasted. As such, this is an open invitation for anyone who wants to participate in a totally improvised session.

Feel free to invite anyone who wish to join 🙂
