Even more work on the Escaping Kazarak Encounter List: The Tidal Wave of Mice

So I worked on the Tidal Wave of Mice encounter. I think it could be fun, but I don’t know if it should be at number 7.

Tidal Wave of Mice

A tidal wave of mice, more mice than you have ever seen in your life, comes rushing out of every open crevice and from the path behind you. The scurrying mass has only one agenda, escape! The party stands between it and the exit. Have each character describe how they are going to react to this situation and roll Defy Danger plus the appropriate modifier based on their description. On a 10+, they succeed! Describe what happens.

On a 7 – 9, choose 1, On a 6-, choose 2:

+ They lose their footing and are trampled by the mice, slowing their progress. The Hillar and Eyrok demon battle will take an additional turn ignoring one call to roll on this checklist before the characters progress. If called for, the titan still takes d6 damage and loses 2 sacrifice.

+ They stumble and drop a random item that is carried away by the rush of mice. Have the players write down their most treasured item they have on them. Roll d6 to identify the item carried away:

+ 1 – 1 Dungeon rations use

+ 2 – Shield or helmet

+ 3 – Weapon or instrument in hand

+ 4 – Book or scroll

+ 5 – Potion

+ 6 – Most treasured item

+ They fall and are carried away on the mouse wave and eventually deposited in some random corner of Kazarak. They must make an additional roll on the Escaping Kazarak Encounter Checklist in order to return to the party. These encounters are not checked off if escaped or resolved by the character.

I’m working on an escape encounter checklist for the #Kazark issue of Ray Otus’ #Plundergrounds zine.

Escaping Kazarak Encounter Checklist

I am going to be running Ray Otus’ #Karazark dungeon starter from issue 2 of his #Plundergrounds #DungeonWorld zine. If you haven’t already seen it or joined his Patreon (http://parteon.com/rayotus) to get a copy you should. Or you can wait for the collected annual that will be available as print on demand sometime early next year.

The Kazarak dungeon starter sets up a really cool final scene, complete with a really evocative custom move, that plays out a climactic battle between a giant dwarven mech construct and an awakened world devouring demon. It’s really cool!

As I am preparing this as a one shot for my son’s birthday, I wanted to spice up their character’s run for safety as the battle between the mech and demon topples the underground city around them. To that aim, I am started working on an Escaping Kazarak Encounter Checklist.

So far, I am thinking about including the following encounters:

# Goblin Raiding Party

# Rust Monster Stampede

# Tidal Wave of Mice

# Constructs Run Amok

I’ll be filling each encounter with descriptions, stats, and custom moves as needed.

I’d love to hear if anyone played any games of Dungeon World at Gen Con.

I’d love to hear if anyone played any games of Dungeon World at Gen Con. Was it a pickup game? Or a Games on Demand game? Or something? How was it?

This is how I imagine Dungeon World combats. There are so many moves that can easily be pulled out of this video.

Sword Breaker Skeleton, aka Pincushion

Solitary, Construct, Terrifying

Charge (b[2d10] + 4 damage, + 4 piercing); 20HP; 4 armor;

Close, Forceful, Reach, Messy, Near

Instinct: Collect weapons

Special Qualities: The sword breaker skeleton is a abhorrent creation; a skeleton that has been reanimated after being dipped in molten metal and instilled with the desire that can’t be sated to take hold of weapons with its very body. Those that hear tales of them laughably call them Pincushions. Only fools that have never encountered one would make such a stupid analogy. Sword breakers are singular in their pursuit and are surprisingly strong and quick. Many have dozens of sharp surfaces protruding from their being and more than a few display the rotting remains of their last adversaries upon those jutting points.

Moves:

Impale its adversary

Charge into a group

Trap a weapon in its body

While listening to a couple of Dungeon World actual play podcasts and contemplating the Druid, I was wondering if there were any resources out there to list possible animal attributes, in a DW context/format, that can be used as suggestions when they shape shift?

I am looking at picking up some of the Lampblack & Brimstone titles soon.

I am looking at picking up some of the Lampblack & Brimstone titles soon. I like getting PDFs but I am have a hard time using them during play. I know you don’t have a lot of printed options outside of Kickstarter, so I was wondering what options there are?

If someone buys a PDF, can they get them printed at Office Depot on their own?

Are you planning to offer Print on Demand when the quality starts to meet your standards (I’ve seen some recent PoD books and they’re quality is improving all the time)?

Thanks for any information that you or the community may have.

My thirteenth #Inktober drawing is of a #DungeonWorld #Mummy.

I’m not even completely sure why I chose to draw a mummy next. It struck me that it would be fun to attempt to draw the oddly shaped angles and postures of these undead monsters.

It didn’t strike me, until drawing this one, that they could be used in all sorts of crypts. I think I was just defaulting to Egyptian mummies as an idea. Dull thinking on my part, I suppose. The idea of the unquiet spirit avenging the desecration of their tomb is really intriguing me now.

I am drawing 31 drawings for #Inktober (and until I finish all 31) in support of #ExtraLife and Riley Hospital for Children. If you like them, please donate.

My #ExtraLife board game marathon is over (http://www.extra-life.org/participant/jimjones), so I am re-reading Dungeon World and taking notes in preparation of my first game with my cousins and a few friends in the next month or so. I’m hoping to have some sort of GM screen / quick notes that I can refer to instead of the book during my planning and sessions.

If one already exists or someone wouldn’t mind sharing their own, please point me to it.

Thanks!

Swamp Shambler

This one took a lot longer than I thought, but I thought it would be fun to do Dungeon World’s take on the shambling mound, or the Swamp Shambler.

I have a very vivid memory of a shambling mound rising up under our party of adventurers when I was playing Dungeons and Dragons as a kid. The idea of the swamp becoming embodied and turning against us was terrifying. Nothing we tried worked against it. It was too soggy to burn and our weapons kept getting tangled up in its endless supply of vines.
