10 Questions inspired by the initial sequences of Diablo III

What is historically significant about this town?

Which of you live in the town and were at the wrong place at the wrong time when the horde attacked?

Which of you were outside the gates fighting alongside the Town Watch?

Which of you were coming down from the hills and, seeing the battle from afar hastened to help the defenders?

What type of horde is attacking the town gates?

How close is the horde to breaching the gates?

How is this attack related to the flaming object that fell from the sky last night?

How close to the town did it strike, and how large of a crater did it make?

What type of building did the falling object strike?

Who was in the building when the object struck?

I had a great time playing my “Skyrim Start” Out of the Frying Pan… so I crafted these questions for a “Diablo III Start”. Coming soon, a “Witcher 3 Start”

New Danger Type: Internal Demons

New Danger Type: Internal Demons

New Danger Type: Internal Demons

For a campaign I started earlier this week I made an Adventure Front for each character (The Thief’s Tale, The Cleric’s Tale) so that they could each have their own pasts coming into play, as well as a Campaign Front for the main story arc.

I didn’t think about it until I was eating dinner tonight, but all of the dangers in the book are external (Organizations, Hordes, Cursed Places, etc.). But with each character having their own front, I started thinking about internal dangers.

Here’s what I have so far. I’m still thinking about the GM Moves, but I think they should write themselves.

Nightmares (to prevent sleep)

Addiction (to cause dependency)

Memory Loss (to confuse)

Unwelcome Memories (to remind of failure or loss)

Disease (to consume from within)

Delusion (to create beliefs contrary to the norm)

EDIT: I reworded the Delusion Impulse

It was a lot of fun, and definitely unlike Skyrim (which I based all of the questions on)

Here are the Fronts I made for it afterwards. I can’t wait to play with this group again!

I’m trying something new tonight.

I’m trying something new tonight. We’re taking a break from our campaign because 1 of my players is out of town for a couple weeks, and her character is crucial to what’s going on in the story right now. I have 2 players and we’re going to try a variation of a dungeon starter. I call it a campaign starter (I know, not super original lol), but it’s a list of 10 questions (new fewer, no more) that helps set up an entire story arc with a big bad, some stakes considerations, a couple locations, a couple NPC’s and a possible path to take when the dust settles. No custom moves, no items, no predetermined NPC’s. Just 10 questions and some imagination. Tonight I’m trying “Out of the Frying Pan…”

Those of you who have played Skyrim will recognize this as the opening scene of that game with a few minor changes.

Out of the frying pan…

What did each of you do that you are here to be executed with these criminals?

Why is this method of execution generally considered a dishonorable death?

Who is it that has the authority to execute you?

Who is that famous (or infamous) person bound along with you?

Why is that person here to be executed along with the rest of you?

What type of legendary beast interrupted the execution just before you were to die?

What was foretold would happen when this beast resurfaced after so many centuries?

Who was it that freed you from your bonds?

What type of structure or area was nearby that you were lead to for safety?

Where can you go to learn more about this beast?

My goal is to create several of these to be able to draw one from a deck or roll a die to determine which one will be used.

What are your thoughts?

I was working on this list for myself when Nuno Ventura mentioned on another post of mine that he would like to put together a travel kit as well and asked what all I had in mine. I’m sure this has a lot of overlap with the Syllabus list that I saw (I can’t find it now) but I built this specifically with travel in mind because I travel a lot for work.

EDIT: I thought I could post a link and a photo at the same time, but apparently not. So I added a photo in the comments.

I needed it for my Dungeon World Travel Kit and couldn’t find it anywhere so I copied and pasted it from the SRD. If this exists somewhere else in a better looking form I’d love to have the link.

I’m working on a project concerning hirelings, so I’ve been throwing all kinds of hirelings towards my son in our 1-on-1 game. He had never used an Adept, because he was using hirelings to fill the roles his Wizard couldn’t. My adult players had never even used hirelings until I started my project, and when they finally did they didn’t use an Adept either because they didn’t have a spellcaster to take advantage of Arcane Assistance.

So in play-testing last night I had a Wizard and an Adept (plus a Druid and Fighter) in the party. An Adept has the Arcane Assistance move which aids spellcasting to give the spell’s effects greater range, duration or potency. The question that came up last night was “If Tendil (the Adept) aids Cedric (the Wizard) with an Invisibility spell can they make everyone invisible?”

Invisibility requires the Wizard to touch an ally to make that ally invisible (I had to look it up). So I told them “Sure, if everyone stands in a circle holding hands with the Wizard casting and the Adept aiding then they can all get Invisibility, but if one person loses it they all do because the magic is broken.”

So they did it (rolled a 7 and chose to forget the spell), sneaked past a BUNCH of Orcs, and Regnar (the Fighter) assassinated the Orc Warchief by decapitation.

ALL of that just to ask how you all have use an Adept to aid a Wizard in your games LOL! Also, do you think allowing the entire party to go invisible too powerful?

One of the things I love about Dungeon World is that I feel it’s easier to role-play due of the absence of crunch.

One of the things I love about Dungeon World is that I feel it’s easier to role-play due of the absence of crunch. For that reason I have actually never even looked at the Barbarian playbook because I assumed it was just a big fighting machine.

I’m looking at it now and it looks like there could be all kinds of fun role-play opportunities with it.

I’m thinking very strongly about using a Chaotic Minotaur Barbarian the next time I get to play. There’s a lot of story that can be told there, and when he NEEDS to fight he’s gonna’ bust some skulls!

What are some good stories your Barbarians have been involved in?

Tabletop Terrors: Learn to Play D&D talks about creating a mission statement for your design goals, and that has really helped me with this. The mission statement for this project was “I want to create a one-page fantasy questing game using Dungeon World rules, that feels like Firefly.”

I built this because some friends wanted to “play a fantasy version of Firefly”. I love Firefly and Dungeon World, but didn’t want to make a bunch of classes or moves, so I attempted to abstract everything down as much as possible.

This is version 1.0 and we’ll be playing tonight. Any and all feedback will be most happily received (even if you tell me it’s crap!).

I put both of my previous One-Roll Generators together into one sheet, and added two more here: NPC’s and Monsters / Creatures.

So this sheet has Regions, Dungeons, NPC’s and Monsters. Enjoy, and any feedback is welcome!
